Safariland Quick Release Sphinx 6385 Holster Review

Let’s Dive into Safariland Quick Release Sphinx 6385 Holster

The Safariland Quick Release Sphinx 6385 Holster is a tactical holster designed for professionals and serious enthusiasts who demand secure weapon retention and rapid deployment. Manufactured by Safariland, a name synonymous with quality and innovation in law enforcement and military equipment, this holster boasts the Automatic Locking System (ALS) and an open-top design, making it a compelling choice for those carrying a Sphinx pistol. Its optimized design for MOLLE vest integration further enhances its appeal to tactical operators.

I’ve been searching for a holster that seamlessly integrates with my MOLLE vest setup without compromising on draw speed or weapon security for quite some time now. I was tired of holsters that either printed too much, shifted around during dynamic movements, or felt sluggish when drawing under pressure. The Safariland Quick Release Sphinx 6385 Holster seemed to address these concerns directly.

Unboxing the holster revealed a robust piece of gear, immediately conveying a sense of durability and quality craftsmanship. The STX Tactical finish felt rugged and the overall weight was substantial, suggesting a solid build. The suede lining was a thoughtful touch.

I considered the Blackhawk! Serpa Level 3 Tactical Holster and the G-Code SOC Holster before ultimately choosing the Safariland. While the Serpa offered similar retention, I disliked the finger-actuated release. The G-Code was modular, but didn’t seem as stable on a MOLLE vest as the Safariland.

My first impression was excitement tempered with a bit of apprehension. Would the ALS system truly be as intuitive as advertised, and would the OMV (Optimized for MOLLE Vest) design live up to its promise of improved stability? Only time and testing would tell.

Real-World Testing: Putting Safariland Quick Release Sphinx 6385 Holster to the Test

First Use Experience

I first tested the Safariland Quick Release Sphinx 6385 Holster at my local outdoor shooting range, integrating it with my standard MOLLE-equipped plate carrier. I ran various drills involving drawing, firing, and re-holstering under simulated stress. I also tested it during a force on force training excercise.

The holster performed admirably even in slightly damp conditions caused by morning dew. The ALS system proved intuitive, allowing for a smooth, straight-up draw with minimal practice after deactivation of the release. The lower center of gravity made a noticeable difference compared to my previous belt-mounted holster, minimizing pulling on the vest.

Initially, the ALS release took a few repetitions to master, requiring a deliberate thumb movement to disengage effectively. The quick-release leg strap, while secure, felt a bit bulky against my leg during dynamic movements.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several weeks of consistent use, the Safariland Quick Release Sphinx 6385 Holster has proven to be a reliable and durable piece of kit. There are minimal signs of wear and tear, even after repeated use during drills and training exercises.

The STX Tactical finish has held up well against abrasion and impacts, showing only minor scuff marks. The suede lining continues to protect the Sphinx pistol’s finish, preventing scratches and blemishes. Cleaning is straightforward, requiring only a quick wipe-down with a damp cloth.

Compared to other tactical holsters I’ve used, the Safariland significantly outperforms them in terms of both weapon retention and stability on a MOLLE vest. The ALS system provides a reassuring level of security.
