My search for reliable 20-gauge ammunition for sporting clays led me to this product. I was seeking a shotshell that would provide consistent patterns and manageable recoil, allowing for quicker follow-up shots. The promise of Fiocchi’s premium components and the attractive discount piqued my interest.
Upon unboxing, the shells appeared well-constructed, with clean crimps and consistent dimensions. The plastic hulls felt robust, suggesting a quality build. The packaging was standard, but functional, protecting the shells during transport.
Compared to similar offerings from Winchester AA and Remington STS, the Fiocchi VIP Heavy stood out due to its lower price point, thanks to the discount. My initial impression was optimistic; the shells looked and felt like a solid product at a fantastic value.

First Use Experience
I tested the Fiocchi VIP Heavy at my local shooting range, focusing on sporting clays. The weather was mild and dry, offering ideal testing conditions. The ammunition cycled smoothly through my Beretta A400 Xplor Action 20 gauge.
The recoil was noticeable, but manageable, allowing for quick target acquisition on follow-up shots. The patterns were consistent at typical sporting clays distances (20-40 yards), breaking targets cleanly. I experienced no failures to feed or eject during the initial testing.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of use, the Fiocchi VIP Heavy continued to perform reliably. I put approximately 250 rounds through my shotgun, and the ammunition consistently delivered tight, even patterns. There were no noticeable changes in performance as the shells aged.
The shells exhibited no signs of excessive wear or degradation even after being stored in my range bag. Cleaning my shotgun after each session revealed normal levels of fouling, comparable to other target loads. The Fiocchi VIP Heavy consistently met my expectations, providing reliable performance for the price.

Specifications
- Gauge: 20 Gauge – The 20-gauge platform offers a balance of manageable recoil and sufficient power for target shooting and some hunting applications. Many find it easier to handle than a 12-gauge, especially for extended shooting sessions.
- Number of Rounds: 25 – This is a standard box quantity for shotgun ammunition, making it convenient for range trips. It is easy to buy multiple boxes to ensure you have enough ammo for an event.
- Shot Size: 8 – Size 8 shot is a common choice for target shooting and sporting clays, offering a good balance of pellet count and energy transfer. This allows for a dense pattern that breaks clays effectively.
- Shell Length: 2 3/4 in – The 2 ¾ inch shell length is the standard for 20 gauge, ensuring compatibility with most 20-gauge shotguns. This is the most common chambering for target and field guns.
- Muzzle Velocity: 1250 ft/s – This is a fairly standard velocity for target loads, providing sufficient energy to break clays at moderate ranges without excessive recoil. The velocity contributes to consistent patterns.
- Application: Target Shooting, Sporting Clays – Specifically designed for these applications, meaning it is optimized for consistent patterns and moderate recoil. This is not the best choice for hunting larger game or self-defense.
- Shotgun Shot Weight: 7/8 oz – A 7/8 oz load in 20 gauge provides a good balance between recoil and pattern density. This weight is suitable for breaking clays without excessive shoulder fatigue.
- Shot Material: Lead – Lead shot is a traditional and effective choice for target shooting, known for its density and energy transfer. Be aware of range restrictions on lead shot.
- Primer Style: Centerfire – Centerfire primers are known for their reliability and consistent ignition. This ensures consistent performance shot after shot.
- Cartridge Case Material: Plastic – Plastic hulls are durable, weather-resistant, and relatively inexpensive to manufacture. This helps keep the cost of the ammunition down.
- Lead Free: No – This ammunition contains lead, which is important to consider due to environmental regulations and range restrictions. Always check your local range regulations before using lead shot.
Performance & Functionality
The Fiocchi VIP Heavy performed admirably during my testing, consistently breaking clays at distances of up to 40 yards. The patterns were even and dense, with minimal flyers. The ammunition was reliable, with no malfunctions experienced.
However, the recoil was slightly more pronounced compared to some premium target loads. While manageable, shooters sensitive to recoil might find it fatiguing during extended sessions. Overall, the Fiocchi VIP Heavy met my expectations for target ammunition.
Design & Ergonomics
The Fiocchi VIP Heavy is designed as a standard target shotshell, with no particular ergonomic features. The plastic hull is smooth and consistent, ensuring easy loading and ejection. The crimp is well-formed, preventing shot from spilling.
There is no particular learning curve associated with this ammunition; it performs as expected out of the box. The design is simple and functional, prioritizing performance over aesthetics.
Durability & Maintenance
The plastic hulls of the Fiocchi VIP Heavy are durable and resistant to weather and handling. I observed no signs of degradation after weeks of storage in my range bag. Cleaning my shotgun after using this ammunition was straightforward, with normal levels of fouling.
Assuming proper storage, the Fiocchi VIP Heavy should last for several years. There are no user-serviceable parts, so maintenance is limited to proper storage.
Accessories and Customization Options
No accessories are included with the Fiocchi VIP Heavy, as it is a self-contained ammunition product. There are no customization options for the ammunition itself. However, it is compatible with any 20-gauge shotgun chambered for 2 ¾ inch shells.
Shooters can tailor their shotgun’s performance using different chokes to optimize patterns at various distances. The Fiocchi VIP Heavy is a versatile choice that works well with a variety of chokes.
