Let’s Talk About XS Sight Systems DXW Big Dot Sight – Colt
The XS Sight Systems DXW Big Dot Sight – Colt is designed for shooters who prioritize rapid target acquisition, especially in low-light conditions. XS Sight Systems aims to improve aiming capabilities on your Colt pistol. The large, high-visibility front sight and simplified rear sight are intended for intuitive shooting.
I’ve always struggled with standard pistol sights in dynamic shooting scenarios. My eyes have difficulty focusing on both the front and rear sights simultaneously, particularly when under stress. I needed a sighting system that allowed me to quickly and instinctively acquire my target.
The XS Sight Systems DXW Big Dot Sight – Colt arrived in a simple, no-frills package. The sights felt robust and well-made, crafted from solid steel with a matte black finish. The size of the front sight immediately stood out; it’s significantly larger than any other pistol sight I’ve used.
I considered several other options, including Trijicon HD XR sights and Ameriglo Hackathorn sights. The Trijicon sights offer a bright tritium dot and a defined sight picture. The Ameriglo sights are known for their straightforward design and value. Ultimately, I chose the XS Sight Systems DXW Big Dot Sight – Colt because of its focus on speed and simplicity.
My first impression was a mix of excitement and apprehension. The size of the front sight was almost comically large, but I was eager to see if it would deliver on its promise of faster target acquisition. I wondered if the non-tritium rear sight would be a detriment in very low-light scenarios.
Real-World Testing: Putting XS Sight Systems DXW Big Dot Sight – Colt to the Test
First Use Experience
I tested the XS Sight Systems DXW Big Dot Sight – Colt at my local shooting range. The range offered both indoor and outdoor bays, giving me a chance to test the sights in varying lighting conditions. I used my Colt 1911, chambered in .45 ACP, as the test platform.
The sights performed admirably under different conditions. The bright white ring surrounding the tritium dot on the front sight was easy to pick up in bright sunlight. The tritium dot itself was clearly visible in the darker indoor bay, even without ambient light.
The learning curve was surprisingly minimal. The “dot the i” sight picture is incredibly intuitive, and I found myself acquiring targets much faster than with traditional sights. The large front sight naturally drew my eye, allowing me to focus quickly. After a few magazines, the system felt natural. The simple rear sight, while non-illuminated, didn’t cause any major issues in the brightly lit range.
The only initial issue was adjusting to the different sight picture. The large front sight required me to slightly adjust my point of aim at longer distances. This was a minor adjustment, easily corrected with a few practice shots.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of regular use, the XS Sight Systems DXW Big Dot Sight – Colt has held up exceptionally well. There are no signs of wear and tear on the steel construction. The blued finish has resisted scratches and corrosion, even after being exposed to sweat and cleaning solvents.
Maintenance has been a breeze. I simply wipe down the sights with a clean cloth after each range session. There’s no need for any special cleaning agents or tools. I did apply a tiny bit of oil to the dovetail to keep it protected.
These sights have significantly outperformed my previous experiences with standard pistol sights. The speed and ease of target acquisition are unmatched. They have proven to be a reliable and effective upgrade for my Colt 1911. I find that my follow-up shots are faster and more accurate than before.
