Let’s Talk About WOW Watersports 19-9000 Watersports Sound Buoy
The WOW Watersports 19-9000 Watersports Sound Buoy promises to be more than just a speaker; it’s a portable party, a floating ambiance creator, and a rugged companion for any outdoor adventure. Made by WOW Watersports, this little buoy aims to combine high-volume stereo sound with a multi-color LED lamp, all wrapped in a waterproof, shockproof, and dustproof package. The concept is alluring: music and light, wherever you go, especially if that “where” involves water.
My need for a product like this stemmed from a desire to have easily accessible music on kayak trips and beach outings. I’ve tried various Bluetooth speakers over the years, and they’ve either lacked the volume to cut through wind and waves or the durability to survive accidental dunkings. A truly waterproof and buoyant speaker with decent sound quality has been an elusive holy grail.
Upon unboxing, the WOW Watersports 19-9000 Watersports Sound Buoy felt surprisingly solid. The plastic housing has a reassuring heft, and the carry handle seems sturdy enough to withstand some serious abuse. The stemmed bottom, designed to fit in WOW Watersports cup holders, is a clever touch, hinting at its intended use.
Compared to other portable speakers I’ve used, like the JBL Flip series or the Anker Soundcore Motion+, the WOW Watersports Sound Buoy prioritizes ruggedness and waterproofness over pure audio fidelity. While those other speakers might offer slightly richer sound in a controlled environment, they don’t inspire the same confidence when faced with a potential swim in the lake. I picked the WOW Watersports buoy hoping for a more carefree listening experience, without the constant worry of water damage.
My first impression was cautiously optimistic. The design is functional, not necessarily beautiful, but the promise of worry-free music in the great outdoors was definitely exciting. I was hoping it could deliver on its promise of rugged durability and surprisingly high-volume sound, especially on the water.
Real-World Testing: Putting WOW Watersports 19-9000 Watersports Sound Buoy to the Test
First Use Experience
I tested the WOW Watersports 19-9000 Watersports Sound Buoy on a weekend kayaking trip down the Green River. I secured it in the cup holder of my kayak and used it while paddling and lounging on the shore. The conditions were sunny, with a moderate breeze and occasional splashes of water.
The speaker performed admirably, projecting sound clearly even against the wind. Its buoyancy was immediately apparent, bobbing happily whenever I accidentally knocked it overboard during clumsy re-entries to my kayak. Using the large buttons to control the volume and skip tracks was very easy, even with wet hands. No need for fumbling with tiny, hard-to-locate buttons, even while kayaking.
One minor issue arose: at maximum volume, the sound became slightly distorted, especially with bass-heavy music. I kept it at around 80% volume for the best balance of clarity and loudness. Still very loud and clear!
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of regular use, including multiple kayak trips, a beach bonfire, and even a muddy mountain bike ride (it sat securely in my bottle cage!), the WOW Watersports 19-9000 Watersports Sound Buoy has held up remarkably well. There are a few minor scuffs on the plastic housing, but no signs of cracking or water intrusion.
The battery life has been consistent, delivering around 6-8 hours of playback at moderate volume levels. Cleaning is a breeze; I simply rinse it off with fresh water after each use. So easy to clean!
Compared to my previous Bluetooth speaker experiences, the WOW Watersports Sound Buoy has been a significant upgrade in terms of durability and peace of mind. While the sound quality might not satisfy audiophiles, its ability to withstand the rigors of outdoor use makes it a clear winner for adventurous listeners. It outperforms everything else I’ve used in the outdoors.
