First Impressions of Woodhaven Calls WoodHaven Wasp Nest Turkey Call
The Woodhaven Calls WoodHaven Wasp Nest Turkey Call 3-pack promises a versatile arsenal of turkey vocalizations within a hunter’s reach. Designed by Woodhaven Calls, a trusted name in the turkey hunting world, these diaphragm calls aim to replicate the cutting, raspy yelps and nasal tones crucial for attracting wary gobblers. I was instantly intrigued by the claim of three distinct sounds within a single pack, offering variety without the clutter of carrying numerous individual calls.
My journey to these calls started with a frustration I believe many turkey hunters share: the inconsistency of single diaphragm calls. I was seeking a reliable set to handle varying hunting conditions and turkey temperaments. The promise of diverse sounds – from the aggressive cuts to the subtle, early-morning nasal whines – appealed to my desire for adaptability in the field.
Unboxing the Woodhaven Calls WoodHaven Wasp Nest Turkey Call revealed three individually packaged diaphragm calls: the Wasp, Red Wasp, and Black Wasp. The build quality appeared solid, with each call exhibiting clean cuts and tightly stretched latex. My initial impression was that they seemed well-crafted.
Compared to other diaphragm calls I’ve used, like Primos or Quaker Boy offerings, the Woodhaven Calls calls felt slightly stiffer. I was particularly drawn to Woodhaven Calls due to their reputation for producing calls that offer unique tonal qualities. The varying thicknesses of latex and proph in each call within the Woodhaven Calls WoodHaven Wasp Nest Turkey Call promised a level of nuance I hadn’t experienced with other brands.
My first impression was cautiously optimistic. I was eager to get into the woods and test the Woodhaven Calls WoodHaven Wasp Nest Turkey Call in a real-world scenario. The potential for a versatile sound palette had me genuinely excited.
Real-World Testing: Putting Woodhaven Calls WoodHaven Wasp Nest Turkey Call to the Test
First Use Experience
My first field test of the Woodhaven Calls WoodHaven Wasp Nest Turkey Call took place during the spring turkey season in the Appalachian foothills of Pennsylvania. I primarily hunted in mixed hardwood forests with elevation changes. The calls were used in various conditions, from crisp, clear mornings to damp, foggy afternoons.
The calls’ performance was immediately noticeable. The Wasp, with its reportedly lighter latex, produced clean, crisp yelps perfect for reaching out across longer distances. The Red Wasp offered a slightly raspier tone that seemed to entice call-shy birds, while the Black Wasp provided the deepest, most guttural sounds, ideal for close-range persuasion.
Getting accustomed to the calls required a little practice. The stiffer latex demanded a more deliberate air control than softer diaphragms I’d previously used. However, after about an hour of practice, I was comfortably producing realistic yelps, cuts, and clucks.
My initial surprise was how well the Black Wasp mimicked the nasal sounds of a mature hen. It added a layer of realism to my calling sequence. There were no immediate issues; the calls performed as advertised.
Extended Use & Reliability
After a full season of hunting, the Woodhaven Calls WoodHaven Wasp Nest Turkey Call set has proven durable and reliable. There were no signs of significant wear and tear on any of the diaphragms. The latex remained taut, and the cuts maintained their shape.
Maintenance was straightforward. After each hunt, I rinsed the calls with water and allowed them to air dry completely. This simple routine kept them clean and free from debris. Compared to some cheaper calls I’ve used, these Woodhaven Calls models significantly outperformed them in terms of longevity and consistent sound quality.
These calls proved their value throughout the season. They consistently enticed gobblers when other calls failed to elicit a response. The versatility of having three distinct sounds allowed me to adapt to different turkey personalities and hunting scenarios, leading to a successful season.
