The Winchester Metric 7.62x54mm Russian 180 grain Jacketed Soft Point (JSP) Brass Centerfire Rifle Ammunition offers a compelling option for hunters and shooters seeking reliable performance in this classic caliber. Manufactured by Winchester, this ammunition aims to balance affordability with the consistent quality that “USA White Box” is known for, delivering a solid choice for various applications, particularly where soft point ammunition is required or preferred. I’ve spent years working with various types of ammunition, and the nuances of projectile design and cartridge consistency are something I deeply appreciate.
My need for this particular ammunition stemmed from a recent hunting regulation change in my area. It now mandates the use of soft point or hollow point ammunition for deer hunting, effectively ruling out my usual FMJ options. With the added pressure of looming import restrictions on Russian-made ammunition and the generally inflated prices due to the current ammo shortage, I found myself searching for a domestically produced alternative that wouldn’t break the bank.
Upon receiving the Winchester Metric 7.62x54mm Russian 180 grain JSP, my initial impression was positive. The rounds were clean, well-seated in the brass casings, and exhibited the characteristic JSP design, which promises good expansion upon impact. Compared to some of the cheaper surplus ammunition I’ve used in the past, the Winchester offering exuded a sense of quality and consistency.
I considered other options, including offerings from PPU and Sellier & Bellot. However, the Winchester ammunition was the most readily available and competitively priced at the time. The recent 36% discount made it an even more appealing choice.
I was cautiously optimistic about this ammunition. I wanted something dependable for my upcoming deer season. It appeared to be a solid performer right out of the box.

First Use Experience
I tested the Winchester 7.62x54mmR JSP at my local shooting range. The range provides a controlled environment to assess accuracy and reliability. The weather was typical for early fall: cool and slightly damp, which can sometimes affect powder performance.
The ammunition performed admirably in my Mosin Nagant rifle. I noticed consistent cycling and no issues with extraction. The recoil felt manageable, even after firing multiple rounds in succession.
The only minor issue I encountered was a slightly sticky bolt after firing about 30 rounds. This could be attributed to the rifle needing a more thorough cleaning, rather than an issue with the ammunition itself. I’ll keep an eye on this in subsequent sessions.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of use and around 100 rounds fired, the Winchester ammunition continues to impress. There have been no malfunctions, misfires, or other reliability issues. The brass casings show no signs of excessive pressure, and the primers appear consistently struck.
The ammunition has shown no signs of wear and tear beyond typical fouling. Cleaning the rifle after each range session is straightforward. Regular bore solvent and a good brush kept the barrel in optimal condition.
Compared to my previous experiences with surplus 7.62x54mmR ammunition, the Winchester rounds exhibit significantly greater consistency and cleaner burning. It noticeably outperforms the surplus ammunition in both accuracy and reliability. The higher price point is absolutely justified by the enhanced performance and peace of mind.
