Let’s Dive into UTG Pro Quick Detach AK Side Mount
The UTG Pro Quick Detach AK Side Mount offers a versatile and affordable solution for mounting optics and accessories to your AK-pattern rifle. Manufactured by UTG Pro, this mount boasts a quick-detach lever, a top Picatinny rail, and a detachable side rail, making it a compelling option for AK enthusiasts seeking enhanced functionality. I was intrigued by its double rail design and the promise of easy removal and reattachment without losing zero.
I’ve been searching for a reliable side mount solution that allows me to quickly switch between different optics on my AK. I was specifically looking for something that wouldn’t break the bank but would still hold zero after repeated removal and reinstallation. Upon unboxing, the UTG Pro Quick Detach AK Side Mount felt surprisingly solid for its price point. The aluminum construction gave it a reassuring heft, and the matte black finish looked durable.
I considered the Midwest Industries AK Railed Scope Mount and the RS Regulate AK-300 Modular Side Rail System. The Midwest Industries mount seemed bulkier, and the RS Regulate system was significantly more expensive. I opted for the UTG Pro Quick Detach AK Side Mount due to its affordability and the positive reviews highlighting its quick-detach functionality. My initial impression was one of cautious optimism. It seemed well-made, but I was eager to see how it would perform on the range.
Real-World Testing: Putting UTG Pro Quick Detach AK Side Mount to the Test
First Use Experience
I tested the UTG Pro Quick Detach AK Side Mount at my local shooting range on my PSA AK-47 GF3. The conditions were dry and sunny, perfect for sighting in my red dot optic. The mount didn’t slide onto the AK’s dovetail smoothly initially, requiring some gentle persuasion with a rubber mallet.
After a few cycles of mounting and removing, the fit became much smoother. The quick-detach lever locked securely, and I was ready to zero my optic.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several range trips spanning a few months, the UTG Pro Quick Detach AK Side Mount has proven reasonably durable. There are some minor scratches on the finish from repeated mounting and removal, but the mount itself remains structurally sound. Cleaning is simple, requiring only a quick wipe down with a lightly oiled cloth after each range session.
Compared to a cheaper, non-quick detach mount I used previously, the UTG Pro Quick Detach AK Side Mount is a significant improvement in terms of versatility and ease of use. It doesn’t quite match the rock-solid stability of higher-end mounts, but it’s a solid performer for its price.
Breaking Down the Features of UTG Pro Quick Detach AK Side Mount
Specifications
The UTG Pro Quick Detach AK Side Mount boasts several key specifications. It is constructed from durable aluminum with a matte black finish. The mount features a top Picatinny rail with 16 slots, a detachable side rail with 6 slots, and a U-cut for utilizing iron sights. The mount weighs 6.2 oz, is 6.5 inches long, 1.8 inches wide, and 3.3 inches tall.
These specifications are critical for performance. The aluminum construction provides a balance of strength and weight, while the Picatinny rails offer ample space for mounting various optics and accessories. The U-cut allows for continued use of iron sights, a valuable backup option.
Performance & Functionality
The UTG Pro Quick Detach AK Side Mount performs its primary function of providing a stable mounting platform for optics reasonably well. It locks securely onto the AK’s side rail, and the quick-detach lever allows for rapid removal and reinstallation. The biggest weakness is that it may not center perfectly over the bore on all AK variants, as noted by some users.
It meets expectations for a mount in its price range. While not perfect, it provides a functional and versatile solution for mounting optics on an AK.
Design & Ergonomics
The UTG Pro Quick Detach AK Side Mount features a functional design that prioritizes versatility. The ergonomic quick-detach lever is easy to operate, and the dual-rail configuration provides ample mounting space. The build quality is decent for the price point, though the finish is prone to scratching.
It is relatively user-friendly, with minimal learning curve. The initial tight fit on some AKs is a minor annoyance, but once adjusted, the mount is easy to use.
Durability & Maintenance
With proper care, the UTG Pro Quick Detach AK Side Mount should last for several years of regular use. The aluminum construction is reasonably durable, but the finish is susceptible to wear and tear. Maintenance is simple, requiring only occasional cleaning and lubrication of the quick-detach lever.
Repairs are not typically necessary, but replacement parts may be difficult to source if needed.
Accessories and Customization Options
The UTG Pro Quick Detach AK Side Mount is compatible with a wide range of Picatinny-compatible optics and accessories. The top rail can accommodate red dot sights, scopes, and magnifiers, while the side rail can be used for mounting lights, lasers, or other accessories. The detachable side rail offers added versatility.
It is compatible with most popular AK accessories, allowing for significant customization. There are no included accessories, so users will need to purchase optics and other accessories separately.
