Let’s Talk About Truglo Xr 21 21x16mm Red Dot Sight W/rmsc Mounting System
Red dot sights have become increasingly popular in the tactical and shooting communities, offering faster target acquisition and improved accuracy, especially in dynamic shooting situations. The Truglo Xr 21 21x16mm Red Dot Sight W/rmsc Mounting System aims to deliver a compact and reliable optic for pistols and other firearms with an RMSc footprint. Truglo is a known brand, and I was eager to see how this red dot would perform, especially considering its price point.
I was looking for a compact red dot sight to mount on my carry pistol to improve my close-quarters target acquisition speed. I needed something rugged, reliable, and small enough not to significantly increase the overall size of my handgun. The RMSc footprint was a must to match my slide.
Upon unboxing the Truglo Xr 21, I immediately noticed its small size and lightweight design. The matte black finish appeared durable, and the overall construction seemed solid enough for everyday carry. Compared to larger red dots like the Trijicon RMR or Holosun 507C, the Xr 21 is noticeably more compact, which is exactly what I was seeking.
Initially, I was optimistic about the Truglo Xr 21. Its size and weight were perfect for my application, but I reserved final judgment until I could get it to the range and test its performance. I hoped its performance would align with its physical appeal.
Real-World Testing: Putting Truglo Xr 21 21x16mm Red Dot Sight W/rmsc Mounting System to the Test
First Use Experience
I tested the Truglo Xr 21 at an outdoor shooting range in various lighting conditions, from bright sunlight to overcast skies. I mounted it on my Glock 43X MOS, which has an RMSc cut. The initial zeroing process was straightforward.
The red dot was easy to see, even in bright sunlight, and target acquisition was indeed faster than with iron sights. However, I noticed the dot wasn’t perfectly crisp, exhibiting some flaring, especially for someone with astigmatism, like myself. This wasn’t a deal-breaker, but it was something I noted.
The biggest issue arose after about an hour of shooting: the sight shut off. I had read about potential “shake awake” problems but dismissed it as anecdotal. Unfortunately, I experienced it firsthand; the advertised motion-activated auto-on feature simply did not work reliably.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of use, the Truglo Xr 21‘s reliability continued to be a concern. The auto shut-off issue persisted, even with fresh batteries. On two separate occasions, during dry-fire practice, I found the sight had turned itself off, rendering my pistol temporarily useless for self-defense purposes.
The Xr 21 showed no significant signs of wear and tear, and the lens remained clear after cleaning. Cleaning was straightforward with a microfiber cloth and lens cleaner. Compared to a previous Holosun optic I owned, which had a flawless shake-awake feature, the Truglo‘s performance was disappointing.
Breaking Down the Features of Truglo Xr 21 21x16mm Red Dot Sight W/rmsc Mounting System
Specifications
The Truglo Xr 21 21x16mm Red Dot Sight W/rmsc Mounting System boasts several key specifications. It features a 21x16mm window size, offering a decent field of view for a compact optic. The sight utilizes a red dot reticle and is powered by a common CR2032 battery.
It is designed to mount directly to slides or adapters with an RMSc footprint. The Truglo Xr 21 has a 1x magnification, making it suitable for close to medium-range engagements. Weighing in at just 1 ounce, it adds minimal weight to your firearm.
The IPX7 waterproof rating provides decent protection against the elements. The matte black finish helps to reduce glare and improve concealment. However, the lack of a truly functional shake-awake feature significantly impacts its overall utility for defensive applications.
Performance & Functionality
When it’s working, the Truglo Xr 21 does offer improved target acquisition speed compared to iron sights. The red dot is visible in a range of lighting conditions, although the dot clarity could be better. Accuracy is satisfactory, allowing for consistent groupings at typical pistol engagement distances.
The primary weakness lies in its unreliable auto-on/shake-awake functionality. The advertised feature simply did not work consistently in my testing, which is unacceptable for a defensive optic. While the manual on/off switch is present, relying on it in a high-stress situation is not ideal.
The Truglo Xr 21 fell short of my expectations due to the critical flaw in its auto-on system. A defensive optic must be ready to go instantly. The unpredictable shut-off issue negates any benefits it offers in terms of target acquisition speed.
Design & Ergonomics
The Truglo Xr 21 is well-designed in terms of size and weight. Its compact dimensions make it suitable for subcompact and compact pistols. The sight sits low on the slide, minimizing any added bulk.
The manual brightness adjustments are easily accessible, even with gloved hands. However, the lack of tactile feedback makes it difficult to know precisely which brightness setting is selected. The build quality is decent, with a solid feel overall, but the internal electronics clearly need improvement.
The lack of a crisp, clear dot is also a design drawback, although this may be more noticeable to shooters with astigmatism.
Durability & Maintenance
The Truglo Xr 21 seems reasonably durable based on my testing. The housing has held up well to everyday carry and range use. The IPX7 waterproof rating provides adequate protection against rain and moisture.
Maintenance is simple, requiring only occasional cleaning of the lens. The battery compartment is easily accessible for battery changes. However, long-term durability remains a question mark, especially given the electronic issues I experienced.
Accessories and Customization Options
The Truglo Xr 21 comes with basic mounting screws and a small adjustment tool. As it utilizes the RMSc footprint, it is compatible with a wide range of aftermarket pistol slides and adapter plates. There are no other officially supported accessories or customization options offered by Truglo.

Who Should Buy Truglo Xr 21 21x16mm Red Dot Sight W/rmsc Mounting System?
The Truglo Xr 21 might be suitable for recreational shooters looking for a budget-friendly red dot for range use. It could also be a viable option for someone experimenting with red dots on a pistol and doesn’t want to invest heavily upfront.
This is not a good choice for anyone looking for a reliable optic for self-defense or duty use. The unreliable auto-on feature makes it a liability in high-stress situations.
A must-have modification would be to replace it with a different optic.
Conclusion on Truglo Xr 21 21x16mm Red Dot Sight W/rmsc Mounting System
The Truglo Xr 21 21x16mm Red Dot Sight W/rmsc Mounting System promises a compact and affordable red dot solution, but ultimately falls short due to its critical reliability issues. The unreliable auto-on/shake-awake functionality makes it unsuitable for any serious defensive application.
The price may be appealing, but the compromised performance is not worth the risk. Reliability is paramount in a defensive optic, and the Xr 21 simply does not deliver.
I cannot recommend the Truglo Xr 21 for anyone seeking a dependable red dot sight for self-defense. Invest in a more reputable optic from a brand with a proven track record of reliability. Your life may depend on it.
