Let’s Talk About TruGlo Hb Chk Optima+ 12 TG184X
The TruGlo Hb Chk Optima+ 12 TG184X is a choke tube designed for 12-gauge shotguns with the Beretta Optima choke system. Marketed toward turkey hunters and those using high-performance shot loads, it promises tighter patterns and extended range.
My quest for a choke tube that could handle the recoil and power of modern turkey loads led me here. I was looking for something that could withstand the abuse and deliver consistent, tight patterns at longer distances.
Upon unboxing, the TruGlo Hb Chk Optima+ 12 TG184X felt solid and well-machined. The black finish was even and seemed durable, inspiring confidence in its construction.
I considered the Carlson’s Long Beard XR Choke Tube and the Primos Jelly Head Max. Ultimately, I chose the TruGlo Hb Chk Optima+ 12 TG184X because of TruGlo’s reputation for quality and the specific claims about its compatibility with the heavy-hitting turkey loads I intended to use.
My initial impression was one of cautious optimism. It looked the part of a high-performance choke, but the real test would be its performance in the field.
Real-World Testing: Putting TruGlo Hb Chk Optima+ 12 TG184X to the Test
First Use Experience
My first experience with the TruGlo Hb Chk Optima+ 12 TG184X was on a turkey hunt in the rolling hills of eastern Tennessee. I patterned the choke with Winchester Long Beard XR shells at 40 yards, a typical engagement distance for the area.
The weather was damp, with a light rain falling throughout the morning. Despite the less-than-ideal conditions, the choke performed admirably, delivering a noticeably tighter and denser pattern than my factory choke.
The TruGlo Hb Chk Optima+ 12 TG184X was easy to install and required no special tools. I did not experience any issues with loosening during the range session.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of use during turkey and predator hunting seasons, the TruGlo Hb Chk Optima+ 12 TG184X continues to perform reliably. It has become my go-to choke for any situation where I need maximum range and pattern density.
I have noticed no significant signs of wear and tear. The choke shows only minor cosmetic blemishes from being inserted and removed from the shotgun barrel.
Maintaining the choke is simple: a quick cleaning with solvent and a brush after each use keeps it in top condition. It consistently outperforms my expectations relative to other chokes I’ve tried.
Breaking Down the Features of TruGlo Hb Chk Optima+ 12 TG184X
Specifications
- Manufacturer: TruGlo
- Gauge: 12
- Choke Tube System: Beretta Optima Plus
- Compatibility: Rated for Hevi-Shot, Winchester Long Beard XR, Federal Premium 3rd Degree, and other high-performance turkey loads. This broad compatibility gives you the flexibility to use a variety of ammunition.
- Material: Heat-treated steel. Heat-treated steel ensures the choke can withstand the pressure and stress of heavy turkey loads without deformation.
- Construction: CNC-machined for optimum precision with a polished end face. The CNC machining guarantees consistent internal dimensions for optimal pattern performance.
- Technology: Multi-Phase groove technology. This is designed to engage the wadding and guide the pellets for tighter patterns.
These specifications are critical because they directly impact the choke’s ability to handle powerful turkey loads and deliver consistent, accurate patterns. Without durable materials and precise construction, the choke could fail or produce inconsistent results.
Performance & Functionality
The TruGlo Hb Chk Optima+ 12 TG184X excels at producing tight, consistent patterns at extended ranges, significantly improving my effective range for turkey hunting. It does exactly what it is intended to do, providing dense patterns at longer distances than factory chokes.
The strength of the TruGlo Hb Chk Optima+ 12 TG184X is its ability to handle high-performance turkey loads without any degradation in pattern quality. A potential weakness is that it might be too tight for very close-range shots, resulting in a pattern that is too small and unforgiving.
It has exceeded my expectations, providing a noticeable improvement in pattern density and consistency compared to other chokes I have used in the past.
Design & Ergonomics
The TruGlo Hb Chk Optima+ 12 TG184X has a solid and robust build, inspiring confidence in its ability to withstand repeated use. It feels well-made and durable.
The installation is straightforward and user-friendly. No special tools are required, making it easy to swap out chokes in the field.
Durability & Maintenance
With proper care, the TruGlo Hb Chk Optima+ 12 TG184X should last for many seasons. Its heat-treated steel construction makes it resistant to wear and tear.
Maintenance is simple, requiring only regular cleaning to remove powder residue. This helps to prevent corrosion and maintain optimal performance.
