First Impressions of TRU Ball Tru Ball Stinger XT Tactical Bowhunting Release 1501941
The TRU Ball Tru Ball Stinger XT Tactical Bowhunting Release 1501941 is marketed as a durable and precise release aid tailored for tactical bowhunting scenarios. It promises enhanced grip through CNC-machined knurling, independent dual caliper jaws for clean releases, and a rigid rod that folds for convenience. As someone who’s spent years both hunting and instructing others in archery and bowhunting, I’m always on the lookout for gear that balances ruggedness with ease of use. My initial interest was piqued by the “tactical” designation, wondering if it was just marketing hype or if TRU Ball had genuinely engineered a release designed for demanding, real-world hunting situations.
I was looking for a release that would stand up to the abuse of brushy terrain and inclement weather, while still providing the accuracy and consistency needed for ethical harvesting. Too many releases feel flimsy or have triggers that are prone to accidental discharge. I’ve seen firsthand how detrimental a poorly performing release can be to a hunt.
Unboxing the Stinger XT, my initial impressions were positive. The release felt substantial in hand. The CNC-machined knurling on the handle inspired confidence in its grip, even before I had a chance to test it with gloves. Compared to a simpler wrist-strap release I’ve used in the past, the Stinger XT feels like a more deliberate and controlled instrument.
I also considered the Carter Like Mike II and the Scott Archery Little Goose II. I chose the TRU Ball due to the unique combination of its rigid, foldable rod, the pull-to-open caliper design, and the “tactical” focus that suggested a higher level of durability. The price point was also a factor.
My first impression was one of cautious optimism. It seemed like a well-built piece of equipment. I was eager to see how it would perform under real hunting conditions.
Real-World Testing: Putting TRU Ball Tru Ball Stinger XT Tactical Bowhunting Release 1501941 to the Test
First Use Experience
My first testing ground for the TRU Ball Tru Ball Stinger XT Tactical Bowhunting Release 1501941 was at my local archery range. I wanted to get a feel for the trigger mechanism and adjust the draw length before taking it into the field. I spent the afternoon dialing in my setup.
The range conditions were ideal, but I also simulated less-than-perfect scenarios. I deliberately introduced some torque to my grip and practiced drawing with slightly sweaty hands. The Stinger XT performed consistently, delivering clean releases with minimal string torque. It did take a few shots to become comfortable with the pull-to-open, let-up-to-close mechanism, but once I adjusted, it felt intuitive and efficient.
The only initial surprise was the sensitivity of the trigger. It’s light. This required a conscious effort to maintain proper back tension and avoid punching the trigger.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of consistent use, both at the range and during scouting trips, the TRU Ball Tru Ball Stinger XT Tactical Bowhunting Release 1501941 has held up remarkably well. It has become my primary release for both practice and hunting.
I’ve subjected it to a fair amount of abuse. This included exposure to rain, dust, and the occasional bump against rocks and tree limbs. The finish shows minimal signs of wear, and the calipers still operate smoothly and reliably. Maintenance has been simple.
A quick wipe-down with a clean cloth after each use, and a drop of lubricant on the pivot points every few weeks is all it takes to keep it functioning optimally. Compared to my previous wrist-strap release, which required more frequent adjustments and cleaning, the Stinger XT is a definite improvement in terms of durability and ease of maintenance.
