Let’s Dive into Thetford 92860 Porta Potti 135
The Thetford 92860 Porta Potti 135 is a portable toilet designed for use in situations where access to traditional plumbing is limited or unavailable. Manufactured by Thetford, a leader in sanitation solutions for RVs and marine applications, the Porta Potti 135 offers a compact and self-contained solution. Its refreshed, modern appearance and exclusive rotating pour-out spout make it a worthwhile consideration. It’s designed for convenience, hygiene, and ease of use, aiming to bring a touch of comfort to outdoor adventures or temporary living arrangements.
I’ve spent years refining my overlanding setup, and the one persistent challenge has been sanitation. Burying waste is acceptable in some scenarios, but not ideal, and definitely not permissible everywhere. I needed a reliable, compact, and easy-to-empty solution, leading me to explore portable toilet options.
Upon unboxing the Thetford 92860 Porta Potti 135, my first impression was its compact size and relatively light weight. The build quality seemed sturdy, with durable-feeling plastic construction, and the ergonomic carrying handle was a welcome sight. It didn’t feel flimsy or cheap, which is a concern with some portable toilets.
I considered the Dometic 972 and the Camco 41541 as alternatives. I ultimately chose the Thetford 92860 Porta Potti 135 because of its slightly smaller footprint and the rotating pour-out spout, which seemed like a practical feature for minimizing spills during disposal. The Thetford name also instilled a degree of confidence in its quality and longevity.
My initial reaction was positive – a blend of excitement and relief. This looked like it would finally solve my sanitation issues on extended trips without adding excessive bulk or complexity to my gear. It was far better than what I had been using.
Real-World Testing: Putting Thetford 92860 Porta Potti 135 to the Test
First Use Experience
My first real test of the Thetford 92860 Porta Potti 135 was on a week-long overlanding trip through the Mojave Desert. I set it up inside my tent annex, providing a private and convenient restroom facility. This immediately proved better than digging holes.
The desert environment presented challenges with heat and dust, but the Thetford 92860 Porta Potti 135 performed admirably. Even in the dry desert heat, odors were well contained, thanks to the tight seals. The simple flushing mechanism worked effectively, and the unit remained stable even on slightly uneven ground.
The Thetford 92860 Porta Potti 135 was very easy to use straight out of the box. I added the recommended chemicals, filled the fresh water tank, and it was ready to go. There wasn’t any need for complicated setups or modifications.
After the first day, I noticed a minor leak around the base after flushing vigorously. Tightening the connections resolved this issue, but it was a reminder to handle the unit with care. It was a small issue but still one I noted.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of use on various camping and overlanding trips, the Thetford 92860 Porta Potti 135 has held up impressively. I’ve used it in conditions ranging from humid forests to freezing mountain environments. So far, it has performed consistently.
Despite some rough handling during transport, the Thetford 92860 Porta Potti 135 shows only minor cosmetic wear. The plastic is resistant to cracking and fading, and the seals remain effective at preventing leaks and odors. Proper rinsing after each use is key.
Maintenance is straightforward: emptying the waste tank is simple with the rotating spout, and a quick rinse with water and a mild cleaning solution keeps it hygienic. The unit is easy to keep clean as well. This is crucial to any portable sanitation system.
Compared to previous attempts using buckets and makeshift solutions, the Thetford 92860 Porta Potti 135 is a massive upgrade. It’s more convenient, more hygienic, and far less unpleasant to deal with. It exceeded my expectations in terms of ease of use and odor control.
