TB Outdoor Commandeur Smooth Fixed Knife Review

First Impressions of TB Outdoor Commandeur Smooth Fixed Knife

The TB Outdoor Commandeur Smooth Fixed Knife is a formidable piece of equipment. Made by TB Outdoor, this knife immediately catches the eye with its stonewash finish and sleek black G10 handle. At first glance, it promises a blend of rugged durability and refined design, making it an intriguing option for anyone seeking a reliable fixed blade.

I was looking for a robust, full-tang knife that could handle demanding tasks in the field. My aging Becker BK2 was showing its age, and I wanted something with a slightly longer blade and a more ergonomic handle. The TB Outdoor Commandeur seemed to fit the bill, offering a significant blade length without sacrificing balance or control.

Upon unboxing, the knife felt substantial and well-balanced. The stonewash finish on the ALENOX blade gave it a rugged, almost pre-worn look, while the smooth G10 handle provided a comfortable and secure grip. The overall build quality seemed excellent, with no noticeable flaws or imperfections.

Compared to my old BK2 and a Gerber StrongArm I also own, the TB Outdoor Commandeur felt more refined. The BK2 is a brute, the Gerber is utilitarian, but the Commandeur strikes a balance between power and precision. I chose the Commandeur because I was looking for a knife that could handle both heavy-duty tasks and finer cutting work.

Initially, I was impressed and cautiously optimistic. The size and heft of the TB Outdoor Commandeur Smooth Fixed Knife suggested it could handle serious work, but I needed to see how it performed in real-world conditions before making a final judgment. I was eager to get it out in the field and put it through its paces.

Real-World Testing: Putting TB Outdoor Commandeur Smooth Fixed Knife to the Test

First Use Experience

I tested the TB Outdoor Commandeur Smooth Fixed Knife on a weekend camping trip in the Angeles National Forest. The environment ranged from dry, dusty trails to damp, shaded areas near a creek. My tasks included batoning firewood, preparing food, and general camp maintenance.

The Commandeur performed admirably in the varied conditions. The G10 handle remained secure even when wet, and the blade easily sliced through both soft and hardwood. Batoning was surprisingly easy, thanks to the long blade and well-balanced design.

The knife required minimal getting used to. The ergonomic handle and intuitive design made it comfortable to use from the start. After a few initial tasks, it felt like a natural extension of my hand.

There were no significant issues after the first use, only growing confidence. I did notice that the stonewash finish seemed prone to picking up slight scratches, though this added to its rugged aesthetic. The edge held well, but I planned on sharpening it before longer term testing.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several months of consistent use, the TB Outdoor Commandeur has proven to be a reliable and durable tool. I’ve used it on multiple camping trips, a week-long fishing expedition, and even some backyard landscaping projects. It’s seen everything from processing game to cutting rope and shaping wooden stakes.

The TB Outdoor Commandeur has held up exceptionally well, showing minimal signs of wear and tear beyond the initial scratches on the blade finish. The G10 handle remains pristine, and the full-tang construction shows no signs of loosening or weakening.

Maintenance is straightforward. I simply clean the blade with a damp cloth after each use and occasionally apply a thin coat of mineral oil to prevent corrosion. Sharpening the ALENOX blade is easy with a standard sharpening stone.

Compared to my previous experiences with other fixed-blade knives, the TB Outdoor Commandeur Smooth Fixed Knife stands out for its combination of strength, versatility, and comfort. It outperforms my old Becker in terms of precision and ergonomics, and it’s far more durable than some of the cheaper knives I’ve owned. It exceeds expectations in almost every aspect.
