First Impressions of Swagman 64005 Deluxe Bar Adapter For Telescopic Bar
The Swagman 64005 Deluxe Bar Adapter For Telescopic Bar promises a simple solution to a common problem: safely transporting bikes with non-standard frame geometries on a bike rack. Swagman, a well-known name in the bike rack industry, aims to bridge the gap for bikes with step-through frames, full-suspension mountain bikes, or even kids’ bikes, which often don’t fit securely on traditional bike rack arms. At a price point of $41.59, it presents an affordable alternative to purchasing a completely new bike rack system.
I’ve wrestled with this issue for years. I needed a reliable way to transport my wife’s step-through bike without resorting to complicated and often unstable rigging methods. This seemed like the perfect solution.
Upon unboxing, the Swagman 64005 Deluxe Bar Adapter feels surprisingly sturdy. The telescoping bar is made of what appears to be coated steel, and the vinyl-coated hangers inspire confidence. My initial thought was, “Finally, a practical solution that doesn’t involve duct tape and crossed fingers!”
I considered alternatives like the Thule 982XT Frame Adapter, which is pricier, and some generic, no-name brands. I chose the Swagman because of its balance between price, reputation, and seemingly robust construction. The price was just right to give it a try.
My first impression is cautiously optimistic. It feels well-built for the price, and I’m eager to see how it performs in real-world conditions. The promise of a secure and damage-free bike transport is definitely exciting.
Real-World Testing: Putting Swagman 64005 Deluxe Bar Adapter For Telescopic Bar to the Test
First Use Experience
I tested the Swagman 64005 Deluxe Bar Adapter on a weekend trip to the local mountain bike trails. The adapter was used to secure my wife’s Townie step-through bike to our existing hitch-mounted bike rack. Installation was straightforward, attaching the vinyl-coated hangers to the seat post and handlebar stem.
The drive included both highway and bumpy gravel road sections. The bike remained surprisingly stable throughout the journey. There were no alarming wobbles or slippage.
Initially, I was concerned about the adapter scratching the bike’s paint. But the vinyl coating on the hangers seemed to do its job. No visible damage was observed after the first use.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of regular use, the Swagman 64005 Deluxe Bar Adapter continues to perform admirably. The bar has shown no signs of bending or weakening. This is despite regularly transporting a bike close to the 35-pound maximum load.
Minor wear and tear are visible on the vinyl coating of the hangers. However, this is purely cosmetic and hasn’t affected their functionality. Cleaning the adapter is simple. Just a quick wipe-down with a damp cloth is enough to remove dirt and grime.
Compared to previous attempts at securing the step-through bike using bungee cords and foam padding, this adapter is a vast improvement. It offers greater peace of mind. It also reduces the risk of damage to both the bike and the car.
