The Stern Defense SD Mod4 M-Lok 9mm Complete Upper Receiver offers a compact and versatile platform for building a 9mm AR pistol or SBR. Manufactured by Stern Defense, this upper receiver combines a short barrel with M-Lok compatibility, making it appealing for various applications, from home defense to recreational shooting. It’s a self-contained unit, promising ease of installation, and its Glock magazine compatibility is a definite plus.
My journey to the Stern Defense SD Mod4 M-Lok 9mm Complete Upper Receiver started with a desire for a compact, reliable 9mm AR build. I needed something more maneuverable than my standard 16-inch AR-15 but with similar controls and ergonomics. A pistol caliber carbine seemed like the perfect solution for home defense and shorter-range target practice.
Out of the box, the Stern Defense SD Mod4 M-Lok 9mm Complete Upper Receiver feels solid and well-made. The fit and finish are excellent, with a smooth anodized coating and clean machining. The included blast can is a nice touch, and the charging handle feels robust.
I considered the Foxtrot Mike Products FM-9 and the CMMG Banshee upper receivers before settling on the Stern Defense SD Mod4 M-Lok 9mm Complete Upper Receiver. Ultimately, I chose the Stern Defense option due to its positive reviews regarding reliability with Glock magazines and its integrated blast can at a competitive price point. The compact design and M-Lok handguard were also major factors in my decision.
My first impression was one of excitement and anticipation. It seemed like a well-engineered product that addressed all my needs in a 9mm AR upper. I couldn’t wait to get it to the range.
Real-World Testing: Putting Stern Defense SD Mod4 M-Lok 9mm Complete Upper Receiver to the Test
First Use Experience
The initial range test took place at an outdoor range on a sunny afternoon. I mounted the upper onto an AR-15 lower receiver equipped with a standard carbine buffer and a magazine adapter for Glock magazines. The first few magazines were fired at paper targets set at 25 yards to get a feel for the setup.
The performance was generally positive, with good accuracy and minimal recoil. There were a couple of initial failures to feed within the first 50 rounds, but after that, the upper ran flawlessly. The blast can effectively directed the muzzle blast forward.
There was a slight learning curve in getting the Glock magazine adapter to seat correctly and reliably, but it became second nature after a few magazine changes.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of regular use, the Stern Defense SD Mod4 M-Lok 9mm Complete Upper Receiver has proven to be reliable and durable. I’ve put approximately 1000 rounds through it with minimal issues. The upper still looks and functions like new.
There are no noticeable signs of wear and tear on the upper receiver or handguard. I disassemble and clean the bolt and barrel every 300-400 rounds, and the process is simple and straightforward. The finish has held up well, even with regular handling and cleaning.
Compared to my previous experiences with other AR-9 builds, the Stern Defense SD Mod4 M-Lok 9mm Complete Upper Receiver has been significantly more reliable. It outperforms my old franken-gun in terms of both accuracy and reliability.
