Stack-On PDS1800E Electronic Small Drawer Safe Pistol Safe Electronic Keypad 12 Review

Let’s Talk About Stack-On PDS1800E Electronic Small Drawer Safe Pistol Safe Electronic Keypad 12

The Stack-On PDS1800E Electronic Small Drawer Safe Pistol Safe Electronic Keypad 12 offers a compact and secure solution for storing handguns and other valuables. Manufactured by Stack-On, this safe is designed to be easily mounted or placed on a desk or nightstand, providing quick access while deterring unauthorized entry. With its electronic keypad and override key, the PDS1800E aims to balance convenience and security.

Living in a state with increasing property crime, I needed a discreet and reliable safe for my bedside handgun. I wanted something more secure than a simple lockbox, but not as bulky as a full-sized gun safe. The compact size and electronic lock of the Stack-On PDS1800E caught my eye.

Upon unboxing, the safe felt solid, though not overly heavy. The matte black finish gives it a subtle, almost invisible appearance. The steel construction seemed robust, and the keypad was responsive.

I considered the Vaultek VT20i and the GunVault SV500 as alternatives. The Vaultek offered more advanced features like biometric entry, but it was significantly more expensive. The GunVault was cheaper but seemed less sturdy.

My initial impression was cautiously optimistic. The Stack-On PDS1800E seemed to offer a good balance of features and affordability. Whether it could stand up to real-world use remained to be seen.

Real-World Testing: Putting Stack-On PDS1800E Electronic Small Drawer Safe Pistol Safe Electronic Keypad 12 to the Test

First Use Experience

I mounted the Stack-On PDS1800E inside my nightstand drawer, securing it to the bottom with the pre-drilled holes. This kept it completely out of sight, which was a major plus. Programming the electronic lock was straightforward, and the keypad responded quickly.

I practiced opening the safe in the dark, simulating a nighttime emergency. The illuminated keypad made it easy to enter the code, and the door opened smoothly. My only initial concern was the relatively thin foam padding inside, which seemed inadequate for protecting valuable items from impacts.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several months of daily use, the Stack-On PDS1800E has held up well. The electronic lock continues to function reliably, and the finish shows no signs of wear. The batteries are still going strong, though the low battery warning light gives me peace of mind.

The safe has proven durable enough for its intended purpose, protecting my handgun from accidental access and casual theft. However, I wouldn’t trust it to withstand a determined attack with power tools. Cleaning is simple; a quick wipe-down with a damp cloth is all it needs.

Compared to a basic lockbox I used previously, the Stack-On PDS1800E offers a significant upgrade in security and convenience. The electronic lock is much faster to access than a key, and the mounting capability provides an extra layer of protection.

Breaking Down the Features of Stack-On PDS1800E Electronic Small Drawer Safe Pistol Safe Electronic Keypad 12

Specifications

• Material: The Stack-On PDS1800E is constructed from 16-gauge steel, providing a decent level of protection against forced entry. While not as thick as some higher-end safes, it offers a good balance between security and weight.
• Locking Bolts: Featuring 2 locking bolts, this safe enhances its resistance to prying and forced opening. The bolts contribute to the overall security, preventing easy access by unauthorized individuals.
• Electronic Lock: The electronic keypad allows for a customizable 3- to 8-digit code. This provides a convenient and secure method of entry.
• Override Key: An override key is included as a backup in case of battery failure or forgotten code. This ensures you can always access your valuables.
• Internal Dimensions: The internal dimensions are 11.69 inches (width) x 8.5 inches (depth) x 2.3 inches (height). This provides enough space for two handguns or other small valuables.
• External Dimensions: The external dimensions are 12 inches (width) x 8.75 inches (depth) x 4.5 inches (height). Its compact size makes it easy to fit in drawers or mount discreetly.
• Weight: Weighing in at approximately 13.5 lbs, the safe is heavy enough to deter casual theft but light enough to handle easily. This weight contributes to its stability when mounted.

These specifications matter because they directly impact the safe’s ability to protect its contents. The steel gauge and locking bolts determine its resistance to forced entry, while the electronic lock and override key balance security and accessibility. The dimensions dictate what can be stored inside and where the safe can be placed.

Performance & Functionality

The Stack-On PDS1800E performs its primary job of securing handguns and valuables reasonably well. The electronic lock is reliable and quick to access, and the override key provides a crucial backup. It offers a peace of mind for safeguarding small belongings.

One strength is the easy programming and use of the electronic keypad. A weakness is the thin foam padding, which offers minimal protection against impacts. It adequately meets the basic expectations for a small handgun safe, providing a deterrent to unauthorized access.

Design & Ergonomics

The Stack-On PDS1800E features a simple, functional design. The matte black finish blends in easily, and the compact size allows for discreet placement. The weight is manageable, making it easy to install and relocate if needed.

The keypad is user-friendly, with clearly marked buttons and an audible feedback option. However, the interior could benefit from better organization and padding. Overall, there is a minimal learning curve for using this safe.

Durability & Maintenance

The 16-gauge steel construction suggests that the Stack-On PDS1800E should last for several years with proper use. However, it is not designed to withstand sustained or aggressive attacks. Maintenance is minimal, primarily involving occasional cleaning and battery replacement.

Accessories and Customization Options

The Stack-On PDS1800E comes with an override key and mounting hardware. There are no official customization options offered by Stack-On, but users could potentially add aftermarket foam padding for improved protection. Its basic design limits significant customization.

It is not specifically designed to be compatible with accessories from other brands, but generic foam inserts could be used. The focus of this safe is basic, reliable security, not extensive customization.
