SOG Specialty Knives & Tools Recondo FX Fixed Blade Knives Review

Let’s Talk About SOG Specialty Knives & Tools Recondo FX Fixed Blade Knives

The SOG Specialty Knives & Tools Recondo FX Fixed Blade Knives is a modern, full-tang duty knife drawing inspiration from SOG‘s origins in supporting warfighters. With its focus on a secure grip, corrosion-resistant blade, and versatile sheath, it aims to be a reliable companion in any environment. This knife promises adaptability and dependability for those who need a fixed blade they can trust.

My search for a robust, all-weather fixed blade led me to the Recondo FX. I needed something that could handle everything from campsite chores to more demanding tasks during search and rescue training. I was specifically looking for a knife with excellent grip and a sheath that allowed for multiple carry options.

Upon unboxing the Recondo FX, I was immediately impressed by the feel of the rubberized overmold on the handle. The knife felt solid and well-balanced in my hand, and the blade had a sharp, purposeful appearance. The sheath also seemed well-made and offered a variety of carry positions.

Compared to other fixed blades I considered, such as the Benchmade Bushcrafter 162 and the ESEE 5, the Recondo FX offered a compelling combination of features and price. While the Benchmade boasted premium materials and the ESEE 5 unparalleled toughness, the SOG struck a balance between capability and affordability. Ultimately, the SOG‘s grip and sheath versatility won me over.

My first impression was one of cautious optimism. The knife looked and felt promising, but I was eager to see how it would perform in the field. It seemed like a solid piece of gear, but only time and use would reveal its true potential.

Real-World Testing: Putting SOG Specialty Knives & Tools Recondo FX Fixed Blade Knives to the Test

First Use Experience

I first tested the SOG Specialty Knives & Tools Recondo FX Fixed Blade Knives during a weekend camping trip in the Pacific Northwest. This provided an opportunity to assess its performance in a variety of tasks, from preparing food to processing firewood. The damp conditions also allowed me to evaluate the grip in wet circumstances.

The knife performed admirably in the wet conditions, providing a secure grip even with wet hands. Tasks like feathering sticks for fire starting and cutting rope were easily accomplished. I did find the blade a little thick for fine carving work, but it excelled at heavier tasks.

The knife was easy to use right out of the box, with the comfortable handle providing excellent control. The sheath was also intuitive, offering secure retention and easy access. The tool-less tension adjustment was particularly helpful.

The only surprise after my first use was how quickly the blade dulled with repeated use on harder woods. While not a major issue, it highlighted the need for regular sharpening. Overall, the initial experience was positive.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several months of use, the SOG Specialty Knives & Tools Recondo FX Fixed Blade Knives has proven to be a reliable and versatile tool. It has accompanied me on multiple hiking trips, camping expeditions, and even a few search and rescue training exercises.

The blade has held up well to repeated use, with only minor scratches and blemishes on the Titanium Nitride coating. The rubberized handle shows no signs of wear or degradation, maintaining a secure and comfortable grip. The sheath remains functional and secure, with no signs of loosening or damage.

Maintenance is relatively simple, consisting of cleaning the blade with soap and water after each use and applying a thin coat of oil to prevent rust. Sharpening is required periodically to maintain optimal cutting performance. Compared to other knives I’ve owned, the Recondo FX requires minimal upkeep.

While the edge retention could be better, the overall durability and versatility of the Recondo FX have exceeded my expectations. It has become a trusted companion in the field, capable of handling a wide range of tasks with ease and confidence.
