Let’s Talk About SOG Specialty Knives & Tools Poweraccess Assist – Stone Washed
The SOG Specialty Knives & Tools Poweraccess Assist – Stone Washed is a multi-tool designed for everyday carry (EDC) and tactical applications. It’s manufactured by SOG Specialty Knives & Tools and boasts a compound leverage mechanism, assisted opening, and a comprehensive toolset, all wrapped in a stonewashed finish. I sought out this multi-tool as my previous EDC, a generic model, simply couldn’t handle tougher tasks on the job and during outdoor adventures.
Upon unboxing, I immediately noticed the solid construction and the pleasing aesthetic of the stonewashed steel. The weight felt substantial, suggesting durability, but not overly heavy for pocket carry. It felt well-balanced in my hand, a welcome change from the flimsy feel of my old multi-tool.
I considered the Leatherman Wave Plus and the Gerber Multi-Plier 600 before choosing the SOG Specialty Knives & Tools Poweraccess Assist – Stone Washed. The SOG stood out because of its assisted opening feature and the centered magnetic hex bit driver. These features seemed more tailored to my needs compared to the other options. My initial reaction was excitement; the tool felt like a significant upgrade, promising to be a reliable companion for various situations.
Real-World Testing: Putting SOG Specialty Knives & Tools Poweraccess Assist – Stone Washed to the Test
First Use Experience
My first test of the SOG Specialty Knives & Tools Poweraccess Assist – Stone Washed was during a weekend camping trip in the nearby national forest. I used the pliers for tasks like adjusting tent stakes and retrieving a cooking pot from the fire. The compound leverage system genuinely made a difference, providing a strong grip even on awkwardly shaped objects.
The SOG Poweraccess Assist performed admirably in the damp conditions of the forest. The stonewashed finish offered a decent grip even with wet hands. I did need a few minutes to become familiar with the outward-opening components, but the assisted opening of the blade was smooth and efficient. I was surprised by how easily the pliers cut through some small gauge wire when I was setting up a temporary antenna for my handheld radio.
Extended Use & Reliability
After three months of daily carry and regular use, the SOG Specialty Knives & Tools Poweraccess Assist – Stone Washed has proven to be a robust and dependable tool. There are some minor scratches on the stonewashed finish, but no signs of significant wear or damage. The hinges remain tight, and the locking mechanisms are still secure.
Maintenance has been simple; a quick wipe down with a clean cloth after use keeps it in good condition. I occasionally apply a drop of oil to the moving parts to maintain smooth operation. In comparison to my previous, cheaper multi-tool, the SOG is significantly more durable and reliable, showing no signs of loosening or failing under pressure. It outperforms my expectations for an EDC multi-tool.
