Let’s Talk About Shakespeare ATS15LCX Agility 5.1:1 2bb 1366898
The Shakespeare ATS15LCX Agility 5.1:1 2bb 1366898 is a level-wind fishing reel designed for anglers seeking an affordable option with some helpful features. Manufactured by Shakespeare, a brand with over a century of experience in fishing tackle, this reel aims to offer reliability and ease of use without breaking the bank. Its built-in line counter and stainless steel components are noteworthy at this price point.
I was looking for a reliable backup reel for my charter boat operations. Something that could withstand the occasional saltwater spray and provide accurate line readings for consistent bait presentation. The line counter was a primary factor, as it’s crucial for repeatable success when targeting specific depths.
Upon unboxing the Shakespeare ATS15LCX Agility 5.1:1 2bb 1366898, I immediately noticed its compact size and simple design. The plastic housing felt adequate for its intended use, and the handle turned smoothly, albeit with a slight hint of gear mesh. The overall build quality seemed reasonable considering its budget-friendly price.
Compared to my Penn Squall 30LW and Okuma Cold Water Line Counter reel, the Shakespeare reel felt lighter and less robust. However, both those reels are significantly more expensive, so the Shakespeare ATS15LCX Agility 5.1:1 2bb 1366898 fills a niche for anglers seeking value over premium features. I chose it due to the positive reviews regarding its line counter accuracy and overall durability for light to medium duty applications.
My first impression was cautiously optimistic. The reel certainly didn’t exude the premium feel of higher-end models, but it appeared functional and well-suited for occasional use or as a loaner reel for guests on my boat. The key would be how it performed under real-world fishing conditions.
Real-World Testing: Putting Shakespeare ATS15LCX Agility 5.1:1 2bb 1366898 to the Test
First Use Experience
I initially tested the Shakespeare ATS15LCX Agility 5.1:1 2bb 1366898 during a nearshore striper trip in the Chesapeake Bay. I paired it with a medium-action rod and spooled it with 20-pound monofilament. The goal was to use it for trolling umbrella rigs and casting bucktails around structure.
The reel performed surprisingly well in calm conditions. The line counter was accurate within a few feet, and the level wind distributed the line evenly across the spool. However, the drag felt a little sticky at higher settings, which was something I needed to adjust to.
During the initial use, I noticed the bait clicker was not very loud, which made it difficult to hear when trolling in choppy water. This was a minor annoyance, but not a deal-breaker. The handle felt slightly small for my hand, but manageable.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of using the Shakespeare ATS15LCX Agility 5.1:1 2bb 1366898 on roughly a weekly basis, it has held up remarkably well. I rinse it thoroughly with fresh water after each use and occasionally apply a light coat of reel oil. I haven’t noticed any significant signs of wear and tear.
The plastic side plates still look new, and the handle remains smooth. The line counter continues to function accurately. However, the drag still feels somewhat less refined compared to my higher-end reels.
Compared to my older, more expensive reels, the Shakespeare ATS15LCX Agility 5.1:1 2bb 1366898 doesn’t offer the same level of refinement or power. However, it has proven to be a reliable and functional option for light to medium duty fishing. It has definitely exceeded my initial expectations for a reel in this price range.
