Safariland Model 6385RDS-SP10 ALS OMV Drop Leg Holster, S&W M&P 9L 5in w/o Thumb Safety w/SF X200/X300, RH Review

Let’s Dive into Safariland Model 6385RDS-SP10 ALS OMV Drop Leg Holster, S&W M&P 9L 5in w/o Thumb Safety w/SF X200/X300, RH

The Safariland Model 6385RDS-SP10 ALS OMV Drop Leg Holster is a specialized piece of tactical gear designed for professionals and serious enthusiasts who demand rapid access and secure retention of their sidearm, specifically a S&W M&P 9L 5-inch model equipped with a red dot sight and a SureFire X200/X300 weapon light. Manufactured by Safariland, this holster combines their renowned Automatic Locking System (ALS) with an open-top design optimized for optics-equipped pistols, offering a blend of speed and security that’s crucial in dynamic situations. The drop leg configuration further enhances accessibility, making it a standout choice for those operating in tactical environments or needing to carry additional gear on their waist.

My need for this holster stemmed from participating in force-on-force training scenarios and dynamic shooting competitions. I was looking for a system that would accommodate my M&P 9L with an optic and light, offer a secure level of retention without sacrificing draw speed, and integrate seamlessly with my existing MOLLE-equipped tactical vest.

Unboxing the Safariland Model 6385RDS-SP10 ALS OMV Drop Leg Holster revealed a robust, well-constructed piece of equipment. The materials felt durable, the stitching was clean and precise, and the overall design exuded quality, immediately instilling confidence in its ability to withstand rigorous use.

Compared to other drop leg holsters I’ve used in the past, the Safariland offering stood out due to its ALS retention system and the specific cut designed for red dot sights. Many universal holsters require significant adjustments and may not offer the same level of retention or optic protection. I chose this holster over others because of Safariland’s reputation for reliability and the specifically tailored fit for my weapon and accessories.

My first impression was excitement mixed with a healthy dose of anticipation. I was eager to see how the ALS system performed in real-world scenarios and whether the drop leg configuration would truly improve my draw speed and weapon access.

Real-World Testing: Putting Safariland Model 6385RDS-SP10 ALS OMV Drop Leg Holster, S&W M&P 9L 5in w/o Thumb Safety w/SF X200/X300, RH to the Test

First Use Experience

My first test of the Safariland Model 6385RDS-SP10 ALS OMV Drop Leg Holster took place at an outdoor shooting range during a day-long tactical training course. The course involved various drills that simulated close-quarters combat scenarios, requiring frequent draws and re-holstering under pressure.

The holster performed admirably in dusty and sunny conditions. The ALS system retained my firearm securely even during dynamic movements, and the open-top design allowed for a smooth and rapid draw once the release lever was instinctively activated. It took a few repetitions to become completely comfortable with the ALS release, but the motion quickly became second nature.

There were no major issues after the first use, but I did notice that the single strap leg shroud took some adjustment to find the perfect balance between stability and comfort. Initially, I had the strap too tight, causing discomfort during prolonged movement.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several weeks of consistent use in training and competition settings, the Safariland Model 6385RDS-SP10 ALS OMV Drop Leg Holster has proven its durability and reliability. There are no signs of significant wear and tear, even after exposure to rain, mud, and abrasive surfaces.

The holster has required minimal maintenance, primarily consisting of wiping it down with a damp cloth to remove dirt and debris. The suede lining has remained in good condition, protecting the finish of my firearm. Compared to other holsters I’ve used, the Safariland offering surpasses them in terms of retention, draw speed, and overall comfort, particularly when carrying a weapon light and optic.

Breaking Down the Features of Safariland Model 6385RDS-SP10 ALS OMV Drop Leg Holster, S&W M&P 9L 5in w/o Thumb Safety w/SF X200/X300, RH

Specifications

The Safariland Model 6385RDS-SP10 ALS OMV Drop Leg Holster is specifically designed to accommodate a S&W M&P 9L 5-inch pistol without a thumb safety, equipped with a SureFire X200 or X300 weapon light. It features Safariland’s Automatic Locking System (ALS), an internal locking device that secures the weapon in all directions upon holstering, without the need for straps or snaps.

The holster utilizes a single strap leg shroud, allowing it to be worn higher on the thigh for increased comfort and mobility, and is constructed from durable SafariSeven™ nylon blend, which is non-abrasive to firearms finishes. It is also equipped with a red dot sight (RDS) cut, compatible with optics such as the Vortex Viper, Burris Fastfire, and Trijicon RMR. The holster is designed for right-hand draw and utilizes a PALS/MOLLE compatible attachment system for integration with tactical vests and platforms. These specifications are crucial because they ensure compatibility with specific firearms and accessories, provide a secure and reliable retention system, and offer a comfortable and adaptable carry option.

Performance & Functionality

The Safariland Model 6385RDS-SP10 ALS OMV Drop Leg Holster excels in its primary function: providing secure retention and rapid access to a sidearm. The ALS system is incredibly reliable, preventing accidental dislodgement of the weapon while allowing for a quick and intuitive draw with minimal training.

A key strength is the optic cut, which allows for seamless integration with red dot sights without compromising retention or draw speed. The holster’s single strap leg shroud can be both a strength and a weakness. While it offers a higher ride position and increased mobility, it may require more frequent adjustment to maintain stability compared to dual-strap designs.

The holster meets and even exceeds expectations for a duty-grade drop leg holster. The ALS system inspires confidence, and the overall design demonstrates a clear understanding of the needs of tactical users.

Design & Ergonomics

The build quality is exceptional, with high-quality materials and meticulous craftsmanship. The holster is surprisingly lightweight considering its robust construction, and the contoured leg shroud provides a comfortable fit against the thigh.

There is a slight learning curve associated with mastering the ALS release, but once the technique is ingrained, the draw becomes fluid and natural. The single strap design promotes freedom of movement, but may require occasional readjustment, depending on the user’s activity level.

Durability & Maintenance

Given the high-quality materials and robust construction, the Safariland Model 6385RDS-SP10 ALS OMV Drop Leg Holster is expected to last for years under normal use conditions. Regular cleaning with a damp cloth is sufficient to maintain its functionality and appearance.

The non-abrasive SafariSeven™ material is resistant to scratches and wear, ensuring that the holster will maintain its integrity even after prolonged exposure to harsh environments. The ALS mechanism is also designed for durability, with minimal maintenance requirements.

Accessories and Customization Options

The holster itself does not come with additional accessories beyond the standard mounting hardware. However, it is compatible with a variety of Safariland accessories, such as quick-release buckles and leg strap extensions.

The PALS/MOLLE compatibility allows for attachment to a wide range of tactical platforms, offering extensive customization options. Users can also modify the ride height and cant of the holster to suit their individual preferences.
