Safariland 6378 ALS Paddle & Belt Slide Review

Let’s Talk About Safariland 6378 ALS Paddle & Belt Slide

The Safariland 6378 ALS Paddle & Belt Slide holster. It’s more than just a piece of gear; it’s a trusted companion for professionals and responsible gun owners alike. Safariland‘s reputation for quality and innovation precedes them, and this holster aims to combine accessibility with rock-solid retention, offering a versatile solution for concealed carry and open carry situations.

I’ve spent years searching for the “perfect” holster. I needed a holster that was easily concealable, offered a secure hold on my firearm, and could transition seamlessly between paddle and belt slide configurations. The Safariland 6378 ALS Paddle & Belt Slide promised exactly that: security, versatility, and Safariland‘s legendary durability.

Upon unboxing, the first thing that struck me was the build quality. The SafariLaminate™ felt incredibly robust, promising to withstand years of abuse. The ALS (Automatic Locking System) was smooth and intuitive, giving me confidence in its ability to retain my firearm while still allowing for a fast, natural draw. It felt lighter than I expected, a welcome surprise given its sturdy construction.

I’ve tried other open-top paddle holsters and passive retention belt slide holsters before, including models from Blackhawk and Galco. I chose the Safariland 6378 ALS Paddle & Belt Slide for its superior active retention system. Passive retention often felt inadequate.

I was definitely excited. The ALS system instilled a sense of security I hadn’t experienced with other holsters, and the dual-attachment options meant I could adapt to various carry scenarios without having to switch holsters entirely.

Real-World Testing: Putting Safariland 6378 ALS Paddle & Belt Slide to the Test

First Use Experience

My initial testing grounds was the local shooting range. I practiced drawing and re-holstering drills, focusing on smooth transitions and consistent ALS activation. The holster performed flawlessly, allowing for a quick, clean draw every time. The paddle design hugged my hip comfortably, even during rapid movements.

I also subjected the holster to some basic environmental tests. A light drizzle didn’t affect the ALS mechanism, and the draw remained smooth. I tested it with dry-fire drills in dusty conditions, with no issues affecting the retention or release.

The learning curve was minimal. The ALS is incredibly intuitive. A simple thumb swipe is all it takes to disengage the lock, and the firearm draws smoothly.

There were no surprises, which is exactly what I wanted. The holster performed exactly as advertised, instilling confidence in its reliability and functionality.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several months of consistent use, the Safariland 6378 ALS Paddle & Belt Slide is holding up remarkably well. There are no signs of cracking or splitting in the SafariLaminate™ and the ALS mechanism still operates as smoothly as day one.

The holster shows minimal wear and tear. The SafariSuede™ lining inside is doing a great job of protecting my firearm’s finish. I give the holster a quick wipe-down with a damp cloth after each range session and periodically apply a silicone-based protectant to the SafariLaminate™.

Compared to my previous experiences with other holsters, the Safariland 6378 ALS Paddle & Belt Slide is in a different league. It provides a level of security and versatility that I haven’t found elsewhere.
