Let’s Talk About Safariland 6378 ALS Paddle & Belt Slide – 1 out of 2 models
The Safariland 6378 ALS Paddle & Belt Slide – 1 out of 2 models represents a blend of speed, security, and versatility in a holster. Manufactured by Safariland, a name synonymous with law enforcement and military equipment, this holster aims to provide a secure carry solution with a rapid draw. Its defining feature, the Automatic Locking System (ALS), offers Level I Retention without sacrificing speed.
I’ve been searching for a holster that offers both security during active movements and a quick, intuitive draw for years. Many holsters excel at one, but rarely both simultaneously. I was looking for a duty-style holster that could transition seamlessly between range days, training courses, and even the occasional open-carry situation, without compromising firearm retention.
My first impression upon unboxing was that of rugged dependability. The Safariland holster felt solid, well-constructed, and ready for hard use. The STX Tactical finish appeared durable, and the paddle and belt slide attachments provided immediate configuration options.
Compared to a Blackhawk Serpa (which I found prone to accidental releases) and a Blade-Tech Total Eclipse (excellent for concealment, but slower to draw), the Safariland 6378 ALS promised a better balance. The Serpa’s trigger finger release felt unnatural under stress, while the Blade-Tech was too minimalist for duty use. My selection was influenced by my need for a holster that offered a confident grip and a simple, reliable retention mechanism.
Initial excitement was tempered by a bit of skepticism. Could the ALS system truly be as fast and reliable as advertised? Only time and testing would tell if the Safariland 6378 ALS Paddle & Belt Slide – 1 out of 2 models would live up to the hype.
Real-World Testing: Putting Safariland 6378 ALS Paddle & Belt Slide – 1 out of 2 models to the Test
First Use Experience
My first outing with the Safariland 6378 ALS Paddle & Belt Slide – 1 out of 2 models was at an outdoor shooting range. The holster was attached to my belt via the belt slide attachment, offering a secure and stable platform. I ran drills that involved drawing from the holster, engaging targets at varying distances, and re-holstering.
The ALS system proved remarkably intuitive. After a few practice draws, releasing the firearm became second nature, and the draw stroke was both smooth and consistently fast. Even in slightly damp conditions, the grip remained solid, and the release lever was easy to manipulate. There were no major issues, but the paddle attachment, which I tested later, rubbed a bit against my skin after extended movement, something to consider during all-day wear.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of use, the Safariland 6378 ALS Paddle & Belt Slide – 1 out of 2 models has proven its durability and reliability. There are only minor scuffs on the STX Tactical finish, testament to its resistance to wear and tear. The ALS mechanism continues to function flawlessly, providing consistent retention and a rapid draw.
Maintenance is simple: a quick wipe down with a damp cloth keeps the holster clean and functional. Compared to other holsters I’ve used, the Safariland requires minimal maintenance. It definitely outperforms other polymer holsters I’ve owned in terms of long-term durability and consistent performance.
