Made by Safariland, a name synonymous with quality and innovation in the holster industry, this Level III retention holster boasts the Automatic Locking System (ALS) and a hood guard for enhanced security. Its drop Universal Belt Loop (UBL) provides a lower ride height, improving accessibility and comfort, especially when wearing body armor or other gear. This holster promises a blend of security, accessibility, and durability that is essential for those who carry a firearm as part of their profession.
For years, I struggled to find a duty holster that offered both unyielding security and a natural, intuitive draw. Many holsters felt bulky, hindering my movement and adding unnecessary weight to my belt. The promise of the Safariland 6365 ALS Level III w/ Drop UBL Holster – Plain Black, Right Hand 6365-774-61 to solve these issues sparked my interest.
Upon unboxing, the first thing I noticed was the robust construction and the high-quality materials. The plain black finish gives it a professional, low-profile look, and the holster felt solid in my hands. The drop UBL seemed well-designed, promising a comfortable and stable carry.
I considered the Blackhawk! Serpa Level 3 Auto Lock Duty Holster and the Bianchi Accumold Elite 7900 series, but the Safariland‘s reputation for ALS retention and the lower ride height of the drop UBL swayed my decision. I was looking for a holster that wouldn’t just hold my weapon securely but would also facilitate a smooth, quick draw under pressure. The Safariland seemed to offer the best combination of these features.
My initial impression was one of cautious optimism. The holster appeared well-made and functional, but I knew the real test would be in its performance during live-fire drills and daily carry. Only time and rigorous testing would reveal if the Safariland 6365 ALS Level III w/ Drop UBL Holster – Plain Black, Right Hand 6365-774-61 could truly live up to its promise.
Real-World Testing: Putting Safariland 6365 ALS Level III w/ Drop UBL Holster – Plain Black, Right Hand 6365-774-61 to the Test
First Use Experience
I tested the Safariland 6365 ALS Level III w/ Drop UBL Holster – Plain Black, Right Hand 6365-774-61 primarily at the shooting range, focusing on draw speed, retention integrity, and overall comfort during extended wear. Drills involved rapid draws from various positions, including seated, standing, and while moving. I also spent time practicing re-holstering under simulated stress to evaluate the holster’s ease of use in high-pressure situations.
The holster performed admirably in dry conditions, providing a smooth and consistent draw stroke with minimal effort. However, I also subjected it to simulated rain by spraying it down with water and immediately running through the same drills. The ALS system remained reliable even when wet, and the grip remained secure.
The learning curve was minimal, thanks to the intuitive design of the ALS release. It took only a few repetitions to develop a natural and efficient draw stroke. The drop UBL positioned the weapon perfectly for my body type, allowing for a full grip before clearing the holster.
Initially, I noticed a slight resistance when re-holstering, likely due to the tight tolerances of the ALS mechanism. However, this smoothed out after a few days of use. There were no other significant issues or surprises during my first few range sessions.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of consistent use, the Safariland 6365 ALS Level III w/ Drop UBL Holster – Plain Black, Right Hand 6365-774-61 has proven to be exceptionally durable and reliable. Despite regular exposure to sweat, dirt, and the rigors of daily duty carry, the holster shows minimal signs of wear and tear. The plain black finish has held up well, with no significant scratches or fading.
The ALS mechanism continues to function flawlessly, providing consistent retention and release, even after thousands of draws. I’ve noticed no degradation in the hood guard’s functionality, and it remains securely in place when not in use. The drop UBL is comfortable for all-day wear and has shown no signs of loosening or shifting.
Maintaining the holster is simple; a quick wipe-down with a damp cloth is typically sufficient to remove dirt and debris. I occasionally apply a small amount of silicone lubricant to the ALS mechanism to ensure smooth operation. Compared to previous holsters I’ve used, the Safariland 6365 ALS Level III w/ Drop UBL Holster – Plain Black, Right Hand 6365-774-61 significantly outperforms them in terms of durability, security, and comfort.
