Let’s Dive into Safariland 6305 ALS Tactical Holster w/ Quick Release Leg Harness – STX TAC Black, Right Hand 6305-56-131
The Safariland 6305 ALS Tactical Holster w/ Quick Release Leg Harness – STX TAC Black, Right Hand 6305-56-131 is a purpose-built piece of kit from Safariland, designed for professionals who need secure and rapid access to their sidearm. It blends the renowned Automatic Locking System (ALS) with a rugged, adjustable leg harness, providing a stable and customizable platform for various operational environments.
After years of relying on more basic belt holsters, I needed a solution that offered greater security and easier access while wearing heavy gear. Standard belt holsters simply didn’t cut it when maneuvering through complex terrain or engaging in dynamic scenarios. The Safariland 6305 promised a secure, accessible, and comfortable carry solution, and that’s exactly what piqued my interest.
Unboxing the 6305 was a reassuring experience; the STX TAC Black finish was clean and professional, and the construction felt incredibly robust. The weight was noticeable but expected, given the durable materials and the complexity of the leg harness system. The initial impression was one of quality and confidence, as if this holster was built to withstand serious abuse.
Compared to the Blackhawk! Serpa and the Blade-Tech WRS Level 2 Duty Holster, the Safariland 6305 stood out due to its ALS retention system and the overall sturdiness of the leg platform. I found the Blackhawk! to be less secure in high-activity situations, and the Blade-Tech, while durable, didn’t offer the same level of intuitive draw. I chose the Safariland for its reputation for reliability and the promise of a smoother, more secure draw.
I was immediately impressed by the quality and the robust feel of the Safariland 6305. It looked and felt like it could handle anything I threw at it, which built my confidence for serious use in tactical scenarios. I was excited to see how it would perform in the field and whether it would live up to its reputation.
Real-World Testing: Putting Safariland 6305 ALS Tactical Holster w/ Quick Release Leg Harness – STX TAC Black, Right Hand 6305-56-131 to the Test
First Use Experience
I first tested the Safariland 6305 at a shooting range during a force-on-force training exercise simulating close-quarters combat. The weather was mild and dry, providing optimal conditions for assessing the holster’s performance. Drawing from the 6305 was surprisingly intuitive; the ALS disengaged smoothly with proper thumb placement, allowing for a rapid and consistent presentation of the weapon.
The holster performed admirably, maintaining a secure hold on my Springfield Armory Operator 1911, even during dynamic movements and simulated grappling. The leg harness remained stable without excessive shifting, contributing to a confident and controlled draw. One minor issue was adjusting the leg straps for the perfect fit, which took a few tries to achieve optimal comfort and stability.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of regular use in various training scenarios and field exercises, the Safariland 6305 has proven to be a remarkably reliable and durable piece of gear. Despite exposure to mud, dust, and frequent handling, the STX TAC Black finish shows minimal signs of wear. The ALS mechanism continues to function flawlessly, providing consistent retention and smooth draw cycles.
Maintenance is straightforward; a simple wipe-down with a damp cloth is usually sufficient to remove dirt and grime. I occasionally apply a silicone-based lubricant to the ALS mechanism to ensure smooth operation. Compared to my previous experiences with other tactical holsters, the Safariland 6305 significantly outperforms them in terms of security, comfort, and overall durability.

The Safariland 6305 ALS Tactical Holster w/ Quick Release Leg Harness – STX TAC Black, Right Hand 6305-56-131 features the ALS (Automatic Locking System) which secures the weapon upon holstering. It includes the SLS (Self Locking System) hood assembly and a hood guard for added security. The holster is mounted on the same leg shroud assembly as the popular Safariland 6005 series.
This holster is designed for a right-handed draw, and the finish is STX TAC Black. It is specifically fitted for the Springfield Armory Operator 1911-A1 with a Picatinny light rail. The construction uses thermal-molded SAFARI-LAMINATE, protecting the handgun and sights.
These specifications are critical because they ensure the weapon is securely retained, easily accessible, and protected in demanding environments. The ALS and SLS combination provides multiple layers of security, while the leg harness offers a stable and comfortable platform for carrying a full-sized 1911. The SAFARI-LAMINATE construction adds to the holster’s durability, ensuring it can withstand the rigors of tactical use.
Performance & Functionality
The Safariland 6305 excels in its primary function: providing secure and rapid access to a sidearm. The ALS retention system is remarkably effective, preventing unauthorized removal of the weapon while allowing for a smooth, intuitive draw with proper technique. The leg harness distributes the weight of the firearm evenly, enhancing comfort and stability during movement.

A minor weakness is the potential for the ALS release to snag on gear if not properly positioned. Overall, the Safariland 6305 meets and exceeds expectations for a tactical holster, delivering both security and accessibility in a robust package.
Design & Ergonomics
The build quality is exceptional; the materials are durable and the construction is solid. The weight is reasonable considering the materials used and the size of the weapon it accommodates. The leg harness is adjustable, allowing for a customized fit that enhances comfort and stability.
The holster is relatively user-friendly, although there is a slight learning curve associated with mastering the ALS release. However, with a few hours of practice, the draw becomes fluid and natural. The Safariland 6305 is well-designed and ergonomically sound, making it a practical choice for professionals who require a reliable and comfortable carry solution.
Durability & Maintenance
The Safariland 6305 is built to last, thanks to its rugged SAFARI-LAMINATE construction and robust hardware. With proper care, it should provide years of reliable service. Maintenance is simple, requiring only occasional cleaning and lubrication.
