The Safariland 6304 ALS Tactical Holster – STX Tactical Black, Right Hand 6304-148-131 is a serious piece of kit designed for professionals who demand secure weapon retention and rapid access. Safariland is a name synonymous with quality and innovation in the law enforcement and military communities, and this holster lives up to that reputation, offering the Automatic Locking System (ALS) and a robust build for demanding environments. With its STX Tactical Black finish, right-hand configuration, and compatibility with Springfield XD 9mm, .40, and .45 pistols, the 6304 aims to be the ultimate tactical holster.

I was looking for a level III retention holster that could handle the rigors of tactical training and potentially duty use. I needed something more secure than my standard open-top competition holster, and I wanted a leg-mounted platform for comfort and accessibility while wearing body armor.

Out of the box, the holster felt incredibly solid. The SAFARILAMINATE material felt rugged and the hardware was robust. It was heavier than I expected, which initially gave me confidence in its durability.

I considered the Blackhawk! Serpa Level 3 Tactical Holster and the Galco M5X Matrix Holster, but ultimately chose the Safariland 6304 ALS Tactical Holster – STX Tactical Black, Right Hand 6304-148-131 because of Safariland’s reputation for quality and the proven track record of the ALS system. The adjustable leg shroud and compatibility with Springfield XD pistols sealed the deal.

My first impression was positive, though slightly intimidated by the number of adjustments and retention devices. I was excited to get it onto my kit and put it through its paces.

Real-World Testing: Putting Safariland 6304 ALS Tactical Holster – STX Tactical Black, Right Hand 6304-148-131 to the Test

First Use Experience

My first test was at an outdoor shooting range during a tactical pistol course. I was moving through drills, drawing and reholstering frequently, and transitioning between shooting positions. The weather was clear and dry.

The ALS system required some initial practice to master the draw stroke. Once I developed the muscle memory, it became fluid and natural. I appreciated the security of the retention system while moving and engaging targets.

Initially, the leg straps felt a bit awkward, and I had to adjust them several times to find the optimal fit. After a few hours, I found a comfortable position that allowed for a full range of motion. There were no major issues, but the learning curve with the ALS took some adjustment.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several months of regular use in training and on the range, the Safariland 6304 ALS Tactical Holster – STX Tactical Black, Right Hand 6304-148-131 has proven to be exceptionally durable. There are minor scuff marks on the STX Tactical Black finish, but no significant wear or damage. The SAFARILAMINATE construction has held up well to abrasion and impact.

Cleaning is simple; a quick wipe-down with a damp cloth removes dirt and debris. The holster’s internal surfaces haven’t shown any signs of wear or damage from repeated draws and reholstering. Regular inspection of the hardware is recommended to ensure proper function.

Compared to my previous experiences with other tactical holsters, the Safariland 6304 ALS Tactical Holster – STX Tactical Black, Right Hand 6304-148-131 far exceeds them in terms of retention, durability, and comfort. The ALS system provides a level of security that I haven’t experienced with other holsters, and the leg shroud is significantly more comfortable than belt-mounted options when wearing body armor for extended periods.
