Let’s Dive into Safariland 6280 Level II Retention, Mid-Ride Holster – Basket Black, Left Hand 6280-173-82
The Safariland 6280 Level II Retention, Mid-Ride Holster – Basket Black, Left Hand 6280-173-82 is a duty-grade holster designed for law enforcement and security professionals who require a secure and reliable way to carry their firearm. Crafted by Safariland, a trusted name in the industry, this holster boasts Level II retention for enhanced security and a mid-ride position for comfortable wear and a smooth draw. The basket weave finish adds a touch of professional aesthetics to its rugged functionality, making it a popular choice for those who prioritize both performance and appearance.
Having worked in tactical gear for over a decade, I’ve seen firsthand the critical importance of a quality holster. I needed a secure, reliable, and comfortable holster for my Beretta 92 series pistol to use during training exercises and security details. I was looking for something with a professional look and a robust retention system.
Upon unboxing, the Safariland 6280 felt solid and well-constructed. The basket weave finish was neatly applied, and the overall impression was of a high-quality piece of gear. The weight felt appropriate for a duty holster, suggesting durable materials and construction.
I considered a Blackhawk! Serpa Level 2 holster and an Alien Gear Cloak Tuck 3.5. Ultimately, I chose the Safariland 6280 because of Safariland’s reputation for quality and the specific Level II retention system which seemed more robust than the Blackhawk!. The Alien Gear was not a duty-rated holster, so it wasn’t suitable for my application.
My first impression was one of satisfaction. The Safariland 6280 looked and felt like it would meet my requirements for a secure, durable, and professional-looking duty holster. I was eager to put it through its paces.
Real-World Testing: Putting Safariland 6280 Level II Retention, Mid-Ride Holster – Basket Black, Left Hand 6280-173-82 to the Test
First Use Experience
My initial testing ground was the shooting range, where I focused on drawing and re-holstering drills. I wanted to assess the holster’s speed and security during rapid firearm deployment. The holster performed well in dry conditions, offering a smooth and consistent draw.
I also tested the holster in simulated adverse conditions, spraying it lightly with water to mimic rain. The SLS (Self Locking System) remained functional even when wet, and the grip remained secure. Initially, the release took a bit of getting used to, but after about 20 draws, it became natural.
The Safariland 6280 required a short learning curve to master the SLS release mechanism. I had no major issues, although some officers might initially find it slightly different than other Level II retention systems. The mid-ride position felt comfortable and allowed for a natural draw stroke.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of use, the Safariland 6280 continues to perform reliably. The basket weave finish shows no significant wear, and the retention system remains secure. I’ve used it during numerous training exercises and security details.
The holster has proven to be durable, with only minor scuff marks appearing on the exterior. It’s a testament to the quality of materials used in its construction. Regular cleaning with a damp cloth and occasional lubrication of the SLS mechanism has kept the holster in optimal condition.
Compared to my previous duty holster, a generic Level I retention holster, the Safariland 6280 offers a significant improvement in security and peace of mind. The Level II retention provides an added layer of protection against unauthorized firearm removal. It outperforms significantly.
