Safariland, a name synonymous with quality and innovation in law enforcement and military circles, has built a reputation on providing duty gear that performs under the most demanding circumstances. This particular model combines the proven SLS (Self Locking System) with a robust leg harness, offering a secure and accessible platform for your sidearm.
I needed a reliable and secure holster for use during training exercises and potential real-world deployments. My primary concerns were weapon retention, ease of draw, and comfortable all-day carry, especially when navigating dynamic environments.
Upon unboxing, the holster immediately impressed me with its rugged construction and clean, professional appearance. The STX Tactical Black finish looks durable and the overall weight felt substantial, inspiring confidence in its ability to withstand abuse. The leg harness appeared well-designed and adjustable, promising a comfortable fit even with extended use.
I considered Blackhawk’s Serpa level 3 tactical holster and the G-Code SOC holster, but ultimately chose the Safariland 6005 because of its reputation for superior retention and the proven SLS system. While the others offered viable options, Safariland’s legacy in law enforcement made it the clear winner.

Real-World Testing: Putting Safariland 6005 SLS Tactical Holster w/ Quick Release Leg Harness – STX Tactical Black, Right Hand 6005-14921-121 to the Test
First Use Experience
My first experience with the Safariland 6005 was at an advanced pistol training course held at a private shooting range. I spent a full day running drills, practicing transitions, and working on weapon manipulation under pressure. The weather was hot and dusty, providing a good initial test of the holster’s durability and functionality in less-than-ideal conditions.
The holster performed admirably, keeping my Springfield Armory XD secure through all the movements. The SLS system was intuitive to use after a few practice draws, offering a fast and efficient release with positive retention when re-holstering.
I experienced some initial friction with the SLS hood, but a little silicone lubricant solved that issue immediately. Other than that, the holster was flawless.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of consistent use in various training scenarios, the Safariland 6005 has proven to be exceptionally reliable. It has been exposed to rain, mud, and extreme temperatures, and shows no signs of degradation. The STX Tactical finish has held up well against scratches and abrasions, maintaining a professional appearance.
Cleaning the holster is straightforward; a simple wipe-down with a damp cloth is usually sufficient to remove dirt and debris. The leg straps remain secure and comfortable, even after hours of wear.
Compared to my previous experience with cheaper nylon holsters, the Safariland 6005 is in a completely different league. It outperforms them in every aspect, from retention and durability to comfort and ease of use. The investment was well worth it for the peace of mind and enhanced performance it provides.

The holster will not retain the weapon without a light attached. It features the SLS (Self Locking System) rotating hood, a standard hood guard, and is constructed from thermal-molded SAFARILAMINATE.
The holster features a standard double leg strap and leg shroud with mounting holes for optional accessories. It is available in STX Tactical Black finish, categorized as a duty/tactical holster. Understanding these specifications is critical for ensuring proper fit, function, and compatibility with your weapon and accessories.
Performance & Functionality
The Safariland 6005 SLS excels in its primary function: securely retaining and quickly deploying a sidearm. The SLS rotating hood provides excellent weapon retention while still allowing for a smooth, single-motion draw. The molded design ensures a snug and secure fit for compatible Springfield Armory XD models equipped with a weapon light.
The main strength lies in its reliable retention and speed of draw; however, the requirement for a weapon light for retention could be seen as a weakness for those who prefer not to use one. The holster meets and exceeds my expectations for a duty-grade holster.
Design & Ergonomics
The Safariland 6005 features a durable SAFARILAMINATE construction, providing a robust yet lightweight platform. The contoured leg shroud and adjustable straps distribute weight evenly, enhancing comfort during extended wear. The STX Tactical Black finish offers a professional and non-reflective appearance.
The holster is relatively user-friendly, although some practice is required to master the SLS release. Once familiar, the draw is quick and intuitive.
Durability & Maintenance
The Safariland 6005 is built to withstand the rigors of daily use in demanding environments. The SAFARILAMINATE material is resistant to scratches, abrasions, and moisture. With proper care, this holster should provide years of reliable service.
Maintenance is simple, requiring only occasional cleaning with a damp cloth and mild soap. The SLS mechanism may benefit from occasional lubrication to ensure smooth operation.
Accessories and Customization Options
The Safariland 6005 itself doesn’t come with a wealth of accessories, but its design allows for significant customization. The leg shroud features mounting holes for attaching magazine pouches, flashlights, or other essential gear.
The holster is compatible with a variety of Safariland accessories, including different ride heights and belt attachment options. While the retention is dependent on the specific weapon light models listed, finding compatible lights from reputable brands like Surefire and Streamlight is easy.
