Real-World Testing: Putting Safariland 6005 SLS Tactical Holster w/ Quick Release Leg Harness – STX Tactical Black, Left Hand 6005-14921-122 to the Test
First Use Experience
My initial testing of the Safariland 6005 SLS took place at a local shooting range that caters to law enforcement training. I ran drills focused on drawing under stress and rapid target acquisition. The environment mirrored real-world scenarios, complete with timed exercises and simulated threats.
The SLS (Self Locking System) rotating hood proved to be intuitive and surprisingly fast to disengage. Even with gloved hands, I was able to consistently draw my Springfield XD without fumbling. The holster performed flawlessly in dry conditions, providing secure retention and smooth release.
There was a slight learning curve initially. I had to adjust my grip and draw stroke to accommodate the SLS mechanism. However, after a few practice runs, the draw became second nature.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of consistent use during training exercises and force-on-force simulations, the Safariland 6005 SLS has proven to be an extremely reliable piece of equipment. There are no signs of significant wear and tear on the SAFARILAMINATE construction. The STX Tactical Black finish has held up well against scratches and abrasions.
Maintaining the holster is relatively simple. A quick wipe down with a damp cloth after each use is usually sufficient. I occasionally apply a silicone-based lubricant to the SLS mechanism to ensure smooth operation.
Compared to other tactical holsters I’ve used, the Safariland 6005 SLS significantly outperforms them in terms of both security and speed of draw. It offers a level of confidence that other holsters simply can’t match. The quick-release leg harness is also a standout feature that makes doffing the holster easy when transitioning from tactical scenarios to administrative tasks.
Breaking Down the Features of Safariland 6005 SLS Tactical Holster w/ Quick Release Leg Harness – STX Tactical Black, Left Hand 6005-14921-122
Specifications
The Safariland 6005 SLS Tactical Holster w/ Quick Release Leg Harness – STX Tactical Black, Left Hand 6005-14921-122 boasts several key specifications. It is designed for left-handed users. The holster features the SLS (Self Locking System) rotating hood for enhanced weapon retention.
This holster is constructed from thermal-molded SAFARILAMINATE. This ensures durability and protection for both the handgun and its sights. The double leg strap and leg shroud provide a stable and comfortable platform, with mounting holes for optional accessories.
Specifically, this model is designed to fit Springfield Armory XD 9mm, .40, and .45 pistols with an ITI M3, M6, TLR-1, TLR-2, Surefire X200, X300, LAS-TAC 2, or Insight XTI Procyon weapon light attached. Also, the Springfield Armory XDM 9mm & .40 with the above mentioned lights attached. Important Note: The holster will NOT retain the weapon without a light attached.
These specifications are critical for several reasons. The SLS system provides a higher level of security than traditional thumb-break holsters, reducing the risk of weapon takeaways. The SAFARILAMINATE construction ensures the holster can withstand the rigors of duty use. The light-bearing design ensures that you can readily deploy your pistol with a weapon-mounted light attached for low-light or no-light scenarios.
Performance & Functionality
The Safariland 6005 SLS excels at its primary function: securely retaining and rapidly deploying a handgun. The SLS rotating hood is intuitive to operate, allowing for a smooth, single-motion draw once mastered. The holster provides excellent retention, even during strenuous physical activity.
The primary strength of this holster is its balance of security and speed. It retains the firearm firmly while allowing for a relatively quick draw stroke. The reliance on weapon lights for retention can be both a strength and a weakness, forcing users to consider their light-use policy.
Overall, the Safariland 6005 SLS meets and even exceeds expectations for a tactical duty holster, assuming the user is operating with the specified weapon lights.
Design & Ergonomics
The Safariland 6005 SLS is designed with both functionality and comfort in mind. The SAFARILAMINATE material provides a durable yet relatively lightweight platform. The holster sits comfortably on the leg, thanks to the adjustable double leg straps and leg shroud.
The design is generally user-friendly, though the SLS mechanism does require some practice to master. The quick-release buckles on the leg straps make it easy to don and doff the holster quickly. The design is optimized for use with a weapon-mounted light.
Durability & Maintenance
The SAFARILAMINATE construction of the Safariland 6005 SLS is designed to withstand years of use. The holster is resistant to abrasions, moisture, and extreme temperatures. With proper care, this holster should last for a very long time.
Maintenance is straightforward. Regular cleaning with a damp cloth and occasional lubrication of the SLS mechanism are sufficient.
Accessories and Customization Options
The Safariland 6005 SLS itself doesn’t come with a vast array of accessories, but its design allows for customization. The leg shroud features mounting holes that allow the user to attach other accessories, such as magazine pouches or medical kits.
The holster is compatible with a variety of Safariland accessories, as well as some aftermarket options. For example, users can add a Safariland accessory pouch to the leg shroud for carrying spare magazines or other essential gear. Because the holster relies on the weapon light for retention, users are somewhat limited in their choice of lights, but the compatibility with popular brands like Surefire and Streamlight provides plenty of options.
