The Safariland 6005 SLS Tactical Holster w/ Quick Release Leg Harness – STX Foliage Green, Right Hand 6005-149-541 is a purpose-built piece of kit designed for professionals and serious enthusiasts who require secure and reliable firearm retention in demanding environments. Made by Safariland, a brand synonymous with quality and innovation in law enforcement and military gear, this holster combines their proven SLS (Self Locking System) with a quick-release leg harness for unparalleled security and accessibility. Its STX Foliage Green finish offers effective camouflage in a variety of terrains, making it a versatile choice for operators in diverse theaters.
My search for a holster that offered both Level III retention and comfortable all-day wear under heavy gear led me to this model. I needed something that wouldn’t shift or chafe during extended patrols, and that could reliably keep my sidearm secure from accidental drops or unauthorized access.
Upon unboxing the Safariland 6005, I was immediately impressed by the robust construction and the quality of the materials. The SAFARILAMINATE felt incredibly durable, and the hardware seemed heavy-duty enough to withstand significant abuse. The foliage green color was spot-on, blending well with my other tactical gear.
Compared to other leg holsters I’ve used, like the Blackhawk! Serpa or some generic nylon drop-leg options, the Safariland 6005 stood out for its superior retention mechanism and overall build quality. Those other models felt flimsy by comparison, with less secure retention and a tendency to shift around on the leg.
My first impression was overwhelmingly positive. I was excited to finally have a holster that seemed genuinely capable of meeting the demands of my work, providing both security and comfort.
Real-World Testing: Putting Safariland 6005 SLS Tactical Holster w/ Quick Release Leg Harness – STX Foliage Green, Right Hand 6005-149-541 to the Test
First Use Experience
I first tested the Safariland 6005 during a week-long training exercise at a military operating area focusing on reconnaissance and patrolling tactics. The exercise involved long hours of walking and crawling through varied terrain, from dense woodland to open fields.
The holster performed admirably in both wet and dry conditions. Even after being exposed to rain and mud, the SLS system remained smooth and reliable. There was a slight learning curve with the SLS release, but after a few hours of practice, it became second nature.
The only initial issue was adjusting the leg straps for optimal comfort and stability. Once I found the sweet spot, however, the holster felt secure and didn’t shift excessively, even during dynamic movements.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of regular use, the Safariland 6005 has proven to be exceptionally durable. There are minor scuffs on the STX finish, but the holster shows no signs of structural wear or degradation.
Cleaning is straightforward; a quick wipe down with a damp cloth is usually sufficient to remove dirt and grime. The SAFARILAMINATE material resists absorbing moisture and stains.
Compared to other holsters I’ve used in the past, the Safariland 6005 far surpasses them in terms of durability, retention, and comfort. It consistently outperforms even some higher-priced competitors, justifying its investment.

This is achieved without sacrificing draw speed or ease of use once the user becomes familiar with the system.
The SAFARILAMINATE construction ensures exceptional durability and protection for both the handgun and its sights. The standard double leg strap and leg shroud provide a stable and comfortable platform, with mounting holes allowing for the attachment of optional accessories like magazine pouches or tactical lights.
The quick-release leg harness allows for rapid detachment of the holster, which can be crucial in certain emergency situations. The draw stroke is smooth and consistent with proper training. The quick-release leg harness functions flawlessly, allowing for rapid removal of the holster without compromising security during normal use.

However, this is easily overcome with dedicated training. The holster meets and exceeds expectations for retention, durability, and overall functionality.
Design & Ergonomics
The Safariland 6005 is designed with both functionality and ergonomics in mind. The SAFARILAMINATE construction provides a rigid and protective shell, while the contoured leg shroud and adjustable straps ensure a comfortable fit.
The holster’s weight is well-distributed, minimizing fatigue during extended wear. The STX finish offers a secure grip and prevents the holster from becoming slippery, even in wet conditions.
The design is user-friendly overall, though some adjustments to the strap lengths may be necessary to achieve optimal positioning and stability. There is a moderate learning curve, but the benefits of the SLS system and the overall comfort outweigh any initial challenges.
Durability & Maintenance
The Safariland 6005 SLS Tactical Holster is built to withstand the rigors of demanding environments. The SAFARILAMINATE material is highly resistant to abrasion, impact, and extreme temperatures.
The hardware is made from high-quality metal that resists corrosion and wear. With proper care, this holster should last for many years, even under heavy use.
Maintenance is simple, requiring only occasional cleaning with a damp cloth and mild soap. The SLS mechanism may benefit from occasional lubrication to ensure smooth operation.
