It’s built for those who need immediate access to their firearm while maintaining a high level of retention.
My journey to this holster began with a growing frustration with my existing setup. I needed a reliable and secure holster that could withstand the rigors of tactical training and potential real-world scenarios. My old holster lacked the retention I desired, and the cumbersome leg harness made movement difficult.
Upon unboxing, the Safariland 6005 immediately impressed me with its robust construction. The SAFARILAMINATE material felt incredibly durable, and the overall design exuded a sense of quality and precision. The weight was noticeable but reassuring, suggesting a product built to last.
I considered the Blackhawk! Serpa Level 3 Tactical Holster and the G-Code SOC Rig, both popular options. I ultimately chose the Safariland 6005 because of Safariland’s reputation for superior retention systems and the proven track record of the SLS mechanism. The color option, STX Foliage Green, also appealed to me for its versatility in different environments.
My first impression was one of excitement tempered with a touch of intimidation. The holster looked and felt professional, but I knew I’d need to dedicate time to mastering the SLS system to fully utilize its capabilities. I was eager to get it on the range and put it through its paces.
Real-World Testing: Putting Safariland 6005 SLS Tactical Holster w/ Quick Release Leg Harness – STX Foliage Green, Right Hand 6005-14821-541 to the Test
First Use Experience
My initial testing ground was a local shooting range with a dedicated tactical training area. I subjected the Safariland 6005 to various drills, including rapid draws, re-holstering under pressure, and simulated weapon retention scenarios. The weather was dry and sunny, providing ideal conditions for evaluating the holster’s performance.
The SLS system required a bit of practice to become second nature. Once I mastered the thumb release, the draw stroke became smooth and efficient. The holster held my Springfield Armory XD securely, and the quick-release leg harness felt comfortable and stable, even during dynamic movements.
One initial issue I encountered was adjusting the leg straps for optimal fit. It took a few attempts to find the sweet spot where the holster felt secure without restricting my mobility. After a couple of hours, I was comfortable with the fit and confident in the holster’s performance.

After several weeks of consistent use, the Safariland 6005 has proven to be a reliable and durable piece of kit. I’ve taken it through several tactical training courses, including a muddy obstacle course and a force-on-force simulation. The holster has held up admirably under demanding conditions.
Despite repeated use, there are no signs of significant wear and tear. The SAFARILAMINATE material has resisted scratches and abrasions, and the SLS mechanism continues to function flawlessly. The STX Foliage Green finish has also held up well, showing no signs of fading or discoloration.
Maintenance is straightforward; a quick wipe down with a damp cloth is usually sufficient to remove dirt and debris. I occasionally apply a small amount of silicone lubricant to the SLS mechanism to ensure smooth operation. Compared to my previous holster, the Safariland 6005 offers superior retention, comfort, and durability, making it a clear upgrade.
