Let’s Dive into Safariland 6005 SLS Tactical Holster w/ Quick Release Leg Harness – STX FDE Brown, Left Hand 6005-94-552
The Safariland 6005 SLS Tactical Holster w/ Quick Release Leg Harness – STX FDE Brown, Left Hand 6005-94-552 is a purpose-built duty holster designed for professionals who require a secure and accessible sidearm. Manufactured by Safariland, a trusted name in law enforcement and military equipment, this holster boasts the Self Locking System (SLS) rotating hood, offering both retention and a smooth, single-motion draw. The inclusion of a quick-release leg harness distributes weight comfortably and provides a stable platform for your firearm.
My need for this specific holster stemmed from a desire for enhanced security and accessibility during tactical training exercises. I was seeking a left-handed, leg-mounted holster that would accommodate my Heckler & Koch MK23, providing Level II Retention without sacrificing speed. The Safariland 6005 SLS seemed to fit the bill perfectly.
Upon unboxing, the holster exuded quality. The STX FDE Brown finish looked professional and durable, and the SAFARILAMINATE construction felt robust. The build quality immediately impressed me, with tight stitching and well-defined molding for a precise fit.
I considered the Blackhawk! Serpa Level 3 Tactical Holster and the Galco Miami Classic II Shoulder System, but the Safariland 6005’s SLS retention system and quick-release leg harness seemed more tailored to my specific needs. The Blackhawk! offered a similar level of retention but lacked the comfortable weight distribution of the Safariland leg harness. The Galco, while offering excellent concealment, was not ideal for the open-carry tactical scenarios I envisioned.
My initial impression was one of excitement mixed with a touch of anticipation. I was eager to test its performance under real-world conditions and see if it lived up to the Safariland name.
Real-World Testing: Putting Safariland 6005 SLS Tactical Holster w/ Quick Release Leg Harness – STX FDE Brown, Left Hand 6005-94-552 to the Test
First Use Experience
I first tested the Safariland 6005 SLS at an outdoor shooting range during a force-on-force training scenario. This involved dynamic movement, weapon transitions, and simulated engagement of threats. The weather conditions were dry and sunny, providing an ideal environment for evaluating the holster’s functionality.
The SLS system proved to be intuitive and reliable, allowing for a smooth and consistent draw stroke even under pressure. The quick-release leg harness distributed the weight of the MK23 comfortably, preventing the holster from shifting or digging into my leg during movement. There were no malfunctions and I quickly got used to the draw stroke.
After my initial use, I was impressed by the security of the retention system and the comfort of the leg harness. The holster held the firearm securely during sprints, crawls, and weapon manipulations.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of consistent use in various training exercises and outdoor activities, the Safariland 6005 SLS has held up remarkably well. The STX FDE Brown finish has shown minimal signs of wear, despite exposure to dirt, mud, and abrasion.
The only noticeable wear is some slight scuffing on the SAFARILAMINATE near the ejection port of the firearm, which is purely cosmetic. Maintenance involves wiping down the holster with a damp cloth and applying a silicone-based lubricant to the SLS mechanism to ensure smooth operation. This simple routine has kept the holster in excellent condition.
Having used other duty holsters in the past, the Safariland 6005 SLS outperforms them in terms of retention, comfort, and durability. The SLS system is far superior to simple friction retention, and the quick-release leg harness is more comfortable than traditional belt-mounted holsters for carrying a large firearm like the MK23.
