My search for a new duty holster stemmed from a lack of confidence in my existing setup. My previous holster, while functional, didn’t provide the level of security I desired for dynamic training scenarios. I needed something that would absolutely retain my weapon during strenuous activity but still allow for a smooth and rapid draw when necessary.
The unboxing experience revealed a robust and well-constructed holster. The STX FDE Brown finish is both durable and aesthetically pleasing, blending well with common tactical gear. The leg harness felt substantial and thoughtfully designed, promising a comfortable and secure fit.
I considered the Blackhawk! Serpa Level 3 Tactical Holster and the Alien Gear Rapid Force Duty Holster before settling on the Safariland 6005. First Use Experience
My initial testing took place at a local shooting range during a force-on-force training exercise. I subjected the Safariland 6005 to a variety of movements, including running, grappling, and simulated weapon disarming attempts. The conditions were fairly dry and temperate, ideal for getting a feel for the holster’s basic functionality.
The SLS system required a brief period of familiarization, but once I mastered the rotating hood release, drawing my sidearm became smooth and intuitive. Even with aggressive movements, the holster maintained a secure grip on my weapon. There were no accidental releases or fumbles during the drills.
The only initial issue was a slight adjustment to the leg straps to find the perfect balance between security and comfort. The holster initially felt a bit stiff, but this was expected and gradually improved with use. After a few practice draws, the SLS became second nature.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of consistent use in various training scenarios, the Safariland 6005 has proven its reliability and durability. The STX finish shows minimal signs of wear, even after repeated contact with gear and abrasive surfaces. The stitching remains intact, and the SLS mechanism continues to function flawlessly.
The holster has seen use in both wet and dusty conditions, and it has performed admirably in both. Cleaning is simple, requiring only a damp cloth and occasional lubrication of the SLS mechanism. The SAFARILAMINATE construction protects the handgun well from the elements.
Compared to my previous holsters, the Safariland 6005 is a significant upgrade in both security and accessibility. I no longer worry about my weapon being unintentionally dislodged during dynamic movements. The quick-release leg harness is also a welcome addition, making it easy to don and doff the entire setup.
