Safariland 6004 SLS Tactical Holster – STX Foliage Green, Left Hand 6004-7700-542 Review

Let’s Dive into Safariland 6004 SLS Tactical Holster – STX Foliage Green, Left Hand 6004-7700-542

The Safariland 6004 SLS Tactical Holster – STX Foliage Green, Left Hand 6004-7700-542 is more than just a holster; it’s a meticulously crafted piece of gear designed for the tactical professional. Manufactured by Safariland, a name synonymous with quality and innovation in law enforcement and military equipment, this holster combines robust construction with a secure and intuitive retention system. It boasts the SLS (Self Locking System), a rotating hood system that allows for a smooth, single-motion draw while providing superior protection against weapon takeaways.

My journey to finding the Safariland 6004 began with a need for a reliable and secure holster for my Sig Sauer P226 with a weapon light during tactical training exercises. Existing holsters either lacked the necessary retention for dynamic movements or weren’t compatible with my specific pistol and light combination. The Safariland 6004 promised both, along with the added benefit of left-handed compatibility, which is often a challenge to find in high-quality tactical gear.

Upon unboxing, I was immediately impressed by the solid feel of the holster and the quality of the materials. The STX Foliage Green finish provided a subdued and professional appearance, blending seamlessly with my tactical gear. The holster’s weight felt substantial without being cumbersome, indicating a durable and well-constructed piece of equipment.

Compared to other tactical holsters I’ve used, like the Blackhawk Serpa or some generic nylon leg rigs, the Safariland 6004 immediately stood out. The Blackhawk Serpa, while offering quick draw capability, sometimes felt less secure, and the retention mechanism wasn’t as intuitive for me as the SLS hood. The nylon leg rigs, on the other hand, were often flimsy and lacked the molded precision for a specific firearm.

My first impression was excitement mixed with a touch of anticipation. The Safariland 6004 felt like a serious piece of gear, built to withstand the rigors of tactical use, and I was eager to put it through its paces and see if it lived up to the hype.

Real-World Testing: Putting Safariland 6004 SLS Tactical Holster – STX Foliage Green, Left Hand 6004-7700-542 to the Test

First Use Experience

The initial test of the Safariland 6004 was conducted at a law enforcement training facility, during a series of dynamic shooting drills. These drills involved rapid movement, transitions between standing and kneeling positions, and simulated close-quarters combat scenarios. The holster was subjected to various conditions, including dry, sunny weather and later, a simulated rain scenario with artificial sprinklers.

The holster performed admirably under all conditions; drawing from the Safariland 6004 became surprisingly natural after only a few practice repetitions. The SLS hood disengaged smoothly with a simple downward thumb motion, allowing for a quick and efficient draw. Even with wet hands, the grip and operation of the SLS hood remained consistent and reliable.

The only initial issue was adjusting the leg straps to achieve the optimal fit and positioning. This was easily resolved with minor adjustments and familiarization.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several months of consistent use, including weekly training sessions and participation in a tactical shooting competition, the Safariland 6004 has proven its durability and reliability. There are only minor cosmetic signs of wear, such as slight scuff marks on the STX finish, but the holster’s structural integrity remains intact. The SLS mechanism continues to function flawlessly, with no signs of loosening or degradation.

Cleaning is relatively simple; a damp cloth and occasional lubrication of the SLS hood are sufficient to maintain optimal performance. Compared to previous nylon holsters that required frequent washing and were prone to fraying, the Safariland 6004 offers significantly superior durability and ease of maintenance. It has far exceeded my expectations and performs flawlessly.
