The SAF 578-83-551 GLS MULTIFIT HLSTR FDE – Medium Color, Smooth Material, Concealment Holster Type Made a Bold First Impression
In a world saturated with cookie-cutter holsters, the SAF 578-83-551 GLS MULTIFIT HLSTR FDE – Medium Color, Smooth Material, Concealment Holster Type from Safariland promises a unique blend of adaptability and security. The innovative Grip Lock System (GLS) and the durable SafariSeven nylon blend construction piqued my interest, setting it apart from the Kydex and leather options I’ve grown accustomed to. This holster aims to be a jack-of-all-trades, fitting a wide array of firearms while maintaining a low profile.
My search for the SAF 578-83-551 GLS MULTIFIT HLSTR FDE – Medium Color, Smooth Material, Concealment Holster Type began with a common problem: firearm proliferation. My safe had become a diverse collection of handguns, and I needed a versatile holster solution that could accommodate various models without requiring a dedicated holster for each. I was specifically looking for a concealment holster that offered both security and a smooth, snag-free draw.
Unboxing the SAF 578-83-551 GLS MULTIFIT HLSTR FDE was a surprisingly tactile experience. The SafariSeven material felt smooth and almost rubbery, not like the hard plastic I expected. The holster felt lightweight but sturdy, giving an initial impression of quality and resilience.
I considered a few other options before settling on the SAF 578-83-551 GLS MULTIFIT HLSTR FDE. Options from Blade-Tech and Galco were viable, but neither offered the universal fit and active retention system of the Safariland. The Safariland seemed to offer the best of both worlds: a custom fit without the custom price. My initial feeling was cautiously optimistic. I was excited by the potential versatility but also concerned about how well it would truly conceal a variety of firearms and if the GLS system would be reliable under pressure.
Real-World Testing: Putting SAF 578-83-551 GLS MULTIFIT HLSTR FDE – Medium Color, Smooth Material, Concealment Holster Type to the Test
First Use Experience
My first outing with the SAF 578-83-551 GLS MULTIFIT HLSTR FDE was at my local shooting range. I decided to test it with three different pistols: a Glock 19, a Sig Sauer P320, and a Smith & Wesson M&P Shield. The weather was warm and dry, perfect conditions for evaluating the holster’s draw speed and retention.
The SAF 578-83-551 GLS MULTIFIT HLSTR FDE required a short adjustment period. The GLS system is intuitive, but requires a deliberate middle finger placement to disengage. After a few practice draws, I felt comfortable with the motion. The retention felt secure, even during simulated movement, and the draw was surprisingly smooth for a multi-fit holster. My only initial concern was the paddle attachment, which seemed less secure than a traditional belt loop.
Extended Use & Reliability
After a few months of consistent use, the SAF 578-83-551 GLS MULTIFIT HLSTR FDE has held up remarkably well. I’ve used it during several training sessions, both at the range and in simulated tactical scenarios. It has also accompanied me on a few hikes, exposed to sweat and light rain.
The SafariSeven material shows virtually no signs of wear and tear. It has resisted scratches and scuffs, and it hasn’t absorbed any moisture. I’ve cleaned it a few times with just a damp cloth, and it looks as good as new. Compared to my previous Kydex holsters, the SAF 578-83-551 GLS MULTIFIT HLSTR FDE is proving to be much more comfortable for all-day carry. It distributes the weight of the firearm evenly and doesn’t dig into my side. Overall, it has exceeded my initial expectations.
