First Impressions of RTS Tactical Premium Side Plate Pouches
The RTS Tactical Premium Side Plate Pouches offer a straightforward solution for adding critical side armor to your plate carrier setup. From RTS Tactical, these pouches promise to enhance protection and expand MOLLE real estate. These are relatively inexpensive, but does that reflect a reduction in quality?
My interest in these pouches stemmed from a recent training exercise. I realized the vulnerability on my flanks highlighted by aggressors during scenario runs. Existing plate carrier setups often neglect side protection, making these pouches a potentially vital addition to a well-rounded defensive strategy.
Unboxing the RTS Tactical Premium Side Plate Pouches, the initial impression was of functional simplicity. The material felt robust enough for field use, though not as premium as some higher-end options I’ve handled. Stitching appeared solid, indicating a reasonable level of build quality.
Compared to standalone side plate carriers from Crye Precision or Ferro Concepts, the RTS Tactical Premium Side Plate Pouches are significantly less expensive. They also integrate directly into existing cummerbund systems, which is great for avoiding the purchase of a whole new vest system. I was interested to see if their performance would justify the price difference.
Initially, I was cautiously optimistic about the RTS Tactical Premium Side Plate Pouches. The price point was appealing, but I needed to see if they could withstand rigorous use. Would they hold up or fall apart? Only time would tell.
Real-World Testing: Putting RTS Tactical Premium Side Plate Pouches to the Test
First Use Experience
I first tested the RTS Tactical Premium Side Plate Pouches at an outdoor shooting range during a force-on-force training session. The weather was hot and humid, providing a good opportunity to assess comfort and breathability. I was conducting weapons manipulations while moving between covered positions.
The pouches, equipped with 6×8 side plates, initially felt bulky but quickly became manageable as I adjusted my movements. They stayed securely in place during dynamic drills, thanks to the hook and loop front closure and bungee cord rear attachment.
After the initial use, I noticed a slight abrasion where the pouches rubbed against my arms during certain movements. This was easily remedied by adjusting the positioning of the pouches slightly. Overall, initial performance was satisfactory.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of consistent use, including multiple range sessions and a weekend-long tactical training course, the RTS Tactical Premium Side Plate Pouches have held up reasonably well. There’s no sign of stitching failure or significant wear and tear. The pouches have proven to be a reliable addition.
The material has shown some minor fading from sun exposure. However, this is purely cosmetic and doesn’t impact functionality. Cleaning is simple. I just wipe them down with a damp cloth after each use.
Compared to a set of HSGI side plate pouches I previously used, the RTS Tactical Premium Side Plate Pouches are less refined in their design. However, they offer comparable functionality at a much lower cost. For the price, the level of performance is acceptable, and in some ways exceeds expectations.
