Rothco Lightweight Armor Carrier Vest Side Radio Pouch Set Review

Let’s Talk About Rothco Lightweight Armor Carrier Vest Side Radio Pouch Set

As someone deeply entrenched in the world of tactical gear for over a decade, I’ve seen a lot of pouches come and go. Many promise the world but deliver very little, often failing under the duress of real-world use. The Rothco Lightweight Armor Carrier Vest Side Radio Pouch Set, however, piqued my interest with its simple design and affordable price point. Could something so basic actually be reliable?

My primary need was a streamlined, low-profile solution for carrying my comms on my plate carrier without adding unnecessary bulk. I was tired of bulky pouches that snagged on everything. The promise of a lightweight, hook-and-loop attachment system from Rothco was definitely appealing.

Upon receiving the set, I was immediately struck by the simplicity. The 600D polyester felt reasonably robust for its weight, and the hook and loop system appeared sturdy. It wasn’t fancy, but it seemed well-made for the price.

I considered several other options before settling on the Rothco set. Condor makes similar pouches, but their attachment system seemed overly complex. I also looked at some high-end brands like Blue Force Gear, but their price was simply prohibitive for what I needed. My initial impression was cautiously optimistic. The Rothco Lightweight Armor Carrier Vest Side Radio Pouch Set seemed like a no-frills, functional solution. I was eager to see how it would perform in the field.

Real-World Testing: Putting Rothco Lightweight Armor Carrier Vest Side Radio Pouch Set to the Test

First Use Experience

My initial testing ground was a weekend training course focused on urban operations. I attached the Rothco Lightweight Armor Carrier Vest Side Radio Pouch Set to my plate carrier and secured my Baofeng UV-5R radio in one pouch and a spare battery in the other. I immediately noticed how streamlined the pouches were compared to my previous setup.

During the drills, which included simulated building entries and perimeter security, the pouches stayed securely attached. The elastic cord closure provided a snug fit for the radio, preventing it from bouncing around. Even when moving quickly and transitioning between positions, the radio remained secure and readily accessible. No amount of sweat affected the 600D Polyester, which I found impressive.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several months of consistent use, the Rothco Lightweight Armor Carrier Vest Side Radio Pouch Set has proven to be surprisingly durable. I’ve used it in a variety of environments, from hot and dusty outdoor ranges to cold and wet training scenarios. The hook and loop attachment remains secure, showing no signs of weakening.

The only minor wear and tear I’ve observed is some slight fraying of the elastic cord closure, but this hasn’t affected its functionality. Cleaning is simple. A quick wipe down with a damp cloth is usually sufficient to remove dirt and grime. Compared to some of the more expensive pouches I’ve used in the past, the Rothco set has exceeded my expectations in terms of durability and reliability. It’s a testament to the durability that Rothco products possess.
