First Impressions of RIO Ammunition Star Team Training 24 12ga 2-3/4in 1340fps 7/8oz Size 9 STT249 29% Off
As a seasoned outdoor and tactical gear specialist, I’ve spent countless hours on shooting ranges, honing my skills with various firearms and ammunition types. The RIO Ammunition Star Team Training 24 12ga 2-3/4in 1340fps 7/8oz Size 9 STT249 29% Off caught my eye for its promise of quality training rounds at a reasonable price, especially with the advertised discount. My main interest was to find a consistent and reliable load for training new shooters and practicing fast target acquisition drills without breaking the bank.
I needed a training round that would cycle reliably in a variety of 12-gauge shotguns and provide consistent patterns for effective drills. Many budget training rounds suffer from inconsistent powder loads or poor-quality shot, leading to frustrating range sessions. Upon receiving the case of RIO Ammunition Star Team Training 24, I immediately appreciated the clean packaging and the uniformity of the shells.
Compared to other budget training rounds I’ve used, like Winchester Super Target or Federal Top Gun, the RIO Ammunition shells appeared to be better constructed. The crimp was clean and consistent, and the plastic hulls felt sturdy. My initial excitement stemmed from the potential to have a dependable training round that performed closer to premium competition loads without the hefty price tag.
My first impression was one of cautious optimism. The shells looked promising, and the RIO Ammunition name carries a certain level of respect in the shooting community. I was eager to get to the range and see if the performance matched the initial visual appeal.
Real-World Testing: Putting RIO Ammunition Star Team Training 24 12ga 2-3/4in 1340fps 7/8oz Size 9 STT249 29% Off to the Test
First Use Experience
I tested the RIO Ammunition Star Team Training 24 at my local outdoor shooting range, using a variety of 12-gauge shotguns, including a Mossberg 500, a Benelli Nova, and a Beretta A400 Xtreme Plus. The weather was slightly damp, with a light drizzle and temperatures around 50 degrees Fahrenheit. The primary focus was on evaluating cycling reliability, pattern consistency at various distances (15, 25, and 35 yards), and felt recoil.
The RIO Ammunition performed admirably in all three shotguns, cycling reliably without any failures to eject or feed. The 1340 fps muzzle velocity provided a noticeable but manageable recoil impulse, making it suitable for extended training sessions. At 15 yards, the patterns were tight and consistent, creating dense clusters ideal for close-range drills.
I was pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness of the RIO Ammunition; there was minimal powder residue left in the barrels after firing several rounds. This is a significant advantage, as it reduces the frequency of cleaning required during a training session. However, I did notice a slightly stronger smell of gunpowder compared to some other training rounds I’ve used.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of using the RIO Ammunition Star Team Training 24 in various training scenarios, including weekly shotgun practice and a beginner’s shotgun course, it has held up remarkably well. Over approximately 500 rounds fired, I experienced only one misfire, which is a testament to the quality control of RIO Ammunition. The shells consistently cycled, patterned well, and maintained a manageable recoil impulse.
The durability of the RIO Ammunition shells is commendable; even after being exposed to damp conditions, the hulls remained intact and the primers stayed secure. Cleaning my shotguns after using these rounds was straightforward, with minimal residue buildup. Compared to my previous experiences with bargain-basement training loads, the RIO Ammunition clearly outperforms them in terms of reliability, cleanliness, and overall consistency.
I was genuinely impressed with the performance and reliability of the RIO Ammunition Star Team Training 24. It has become my go-to choice for training new shooters and practicing essential shotgun skills.
