The Remington Accessories Field Cable Multi-Caliber Firearm Type Pistol Made a Bold First Impression
The Remington Accessories Field Cable Multi-Caliber Firearm Type Pistol cleaning kit isn’t going to win any beauty contests, but its promise of a compact, multi-caliber solution for maintaining my handguns immediately piqued my interest. For years, I’ve lugged around a bulky cleaning kit, a disorganized mess of jumbled brushes and solvents. I was hoping this kit would offer a more streamlined and efficient cleaning experience, especially for those quick range sessions or when traveling.
What initially drew me to the Remington cleaning kit was its advertised multi-caliber capability. I own pistols chambered in 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP, and the idea of a single kit that could handle all three was incredibly appealing. Upon receiving the kit, I immediately noted the water-resistant tri-fold nylon case. The initial impression was favorable, offering a convenient, all-in-one package.
Compared to my existing haphazard cleaning setup or even standalone bore snake solutions, the Remington Accessories Field Cable Multi-Caliber Firearm Type Pistol promised organization and ease of use. The price point of $10.49 made it a low-risk experiment. I was cautiously optimistic, hoping the kit would deliver on its promise of convenience and versatility without sacrificing cleaning effectiveness.
Real-World Testing: Putting Remington Accessories Field Cable Multi-Caliber Firearm Type Pistol to the Test
First Use Experience
My first test of the Remington Accessories Field Cable Multi-Caliber Firearm Type Pistol took place after a range day focused on pistol drills. I used the kit to clean my Glock 19 (9mm), Sig Sauer P320 (.40 S&W), and 1911 (.45 ACP). The cleaning was performed indoors, in a well-lit environment.
The provided pull cable felt robust, and the T-handle offered a comfortable grip. Switching between the included bore brushes for the different calibers was straightforward. However, I immediately noticed that the supplied cleaning patches were quite thin.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of using the Remington Accessories Field Cable Multi-Caliber Firearm Type Pistol regularly, I can confidently assess its durability and long-term performance. The nylon case has held up surprisingly well, showing no signs of wear despite being tossed into range bags and taken on a few camping trips. The interior storage, while adequate, can quickly become cramped with added solvents and oils.
The bore brushes still perform adequately, but the bristles are starting to show signs of fatigue. The cleaning patches remain a point of concern; they tear easily, requiring multiple patches per cleaning session. Compared to using dedicated cleaning rods and higher-quality patches, the Remington kit offers a less thorough clean.
Breaking Down the Features of Remington Accessories Field Cable Multi-Caliber Firearm Type Pistol
Specifications
The Remington Accessories Field Cable Multi-Caliber Firearm Type Pistol cleaning kit includes the following specifications:
- Firearm Type: Pistol. This kit is specifically designed for cleaning pistol barrels.
- Caliber Compatibility: .357/.380/9mm, .40/10mm, .44/.45. The included brushes cover a wide range of common pistol calibers.
- Includes: Patch Puller, Pull Cable with T-Handle, Cleaning Patches, Bore Brushes. The kit contains the essentials for basic bore cleaning.
- Case Material: Water Resistant Tri-Fold Nylon. The nylon case offers basic protection from moisture and provides organized storage.
These specifications translate to a compact and portable cleaning solution. The multi-caliber compatibility is a major selling point for shooters who own multiple handguns. However, the reliance on pull-through cleaning and the quality of included patches impact overall effectiveness.
Performance & Functionality
The Remington Accessories Field Cable Multi-Caliber Firearm Type Pistol kit performs adequately for basic bore cleaning. The pull cable system works well for quickly removing loose fouling and debris. The included bore brushes are effective at scrubbing the inside of the barrel.
The kit’s biggest weakness is the quality of the cleaning patches. They are thin and prone to tearing, making it difficult to achieve a truly clean bore. While the kit meets the basic expectations of a field cleaning solution, it falls short of providing a thorough clean comparable to using a traditional cleaning rod and higher-quality components.
Design & Ergonomics
The tri-fold nylon case is a well-designed feature, providing a compact and organized storage solution. The zippers with oversized pull strings are a nice touch, making it easy to open and close the case even with gloved hands. The quick-attach pack strap is a convenient addition for carrying the kit separately or attaching it to a range bag.
The T-handle on the pull cable offers a comfortable and secure grip, making it easy to pull the cable through the barrel. However, the limited space inside the case can make it difficult to store additional cleaning supplies, such as solvents and oils. The build quality is acceptable for the price point, but the materials feel somewhat inexpensive.
Durability & Maintenance
The nylon case seems durable enough to withstand regular use, but the included cleaning components are not designed for heavy-duty use. The bore brushes will eventually wear out and need to be replaced. The cleaning patches are disposable and need to be replenished regularly.
Maintenance is simple; just wipe down the components after use and store them in the case. The nylon case can be easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Given the low price point, replacing the entire kit is a viable option when the components eventually wear out.
Accessories and Customization Options
The Remington Accessories Field Cable Multi-Caliber Firearm Type Pistol comes with a basic set of accessories, including bore brushes, cleaning patches, and a patch puller. There are no built-in customization options. However, users can easily replace the included cleaning patches with higher-quality alternatives.
While not officially supported, the pull cable system is compatible with many aftermarket bore brushes and attachments. This allows users to tailor the kit to their specific needs and preferences. The case itself can also be customized by adding additional pouches or organizers.
