Real Avid/Revo Gun Boss Cable Kit Cleaning System Universal 17 Pieces Review

First Thoughts on the Real Avid/Revo Gun Boss Cable Kit Cleaning System Universal 17 Pieces

As a seasoned firearms enthusiast and former armorer, I’ve seen my fair share of cleaning kits, from the basic government-issued models to high-end, specialized systems. When I first saw the Real Avid/Revo Gun Boss Cable Kit Cleaning System Universal 17 Pieces, I was intrigued by its promise of universality and portability at a very accessible price point of $29.99. Could this compact kit truly replace my bulky bench-top setup for routine maintenance, or serve as a reliable field kit for unexpected cleaning needs? This is what I intend to discover.

I was particularly looking for a cleaning system that could handle a variety of calibers without requiring me to lug around multiple, specialized kits. My current cleaning setup, while comprehensive, is simply too cumbersome for trips to the range or extended backcountry hunts. The advertised “universal” nature of the Real Avid/Revo Gun Boss Cable Kit Cleaning System Universal 17 Pieces immediately caught my attention.

Unboxing the kit, my first impression was positive. The molded case feels durable and weather-resistant, certainly a step up from flimsy plastic cases I’ve encountered. It’s compact enough to easily fit in a range bag or backpack, which is a major plus. The included components – brushes, jags, mops, and slotted tips – appear to be well-organized and of reasonable quality.

Compared to my existing Hoppe’s cleaning kit, which is excellent but large, the Real Avid/Revo Gun Boss Cable Kit Cleaning System Universal 17 Pieces emphasizes portability. The Otis Technology cleaning kit is another competitor known for its cable system, but I chose to test the Real Avid/Revo Gun Boss Cable Kit Cleaning System Universal 17 Pieces primarily due to its lower price and the perceived completeness of its accessory assortment. I was also curious to see how it would stack up against the higher-priced options.

My initial excitement was tempered by a healthy dose of skepticism. Universal kits often make compromises in quality or fit to achieve broader compatibility. I was eager to put this kit through its paces and see if it truly delivers on its promises or if it’s just another jack-of-all-trades, master of none. I’m cautiously optimistic that Real Avid has struck a good balance here.

Real-World Testing: Putting Real Avid/Revo Gun Boss Cable Kit Cleaning System Universal 17 Pieces to the Test

First Use Experience

My first opportunity to use the Real Avid/Revo Gun Boss Cable Kit Cleaning System Universal 17 Pieces came during a weekend trip to the local shooting range. I brought along my AR-15 (.223/5.56mm), a 9mm pistol, and a 12-gauge shotgun to give the kit a thorough workout. The range environment was fairly typical – dry and dusty, with temperatures hovering around 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

Using the appropriate brush and slotted tip for my AR-15 was straightforward. The coated steel cable threaded easily through the barrel, and the brush effectively removed powder residue and carbon fouling. The same was true for the 9mm pistol. Switching over to the 12-gauge shotgun, I found the mop and brush to be a good fit, making quick work of cleaning the bore. The included patches worked perfectly with the slotted tips.

One minor annoyance I encountered was the T-handle. While functional, it feels a bit small and less ergonomic than the larger handles I’m used to on my bench-top setup. Applying significant force to scrub stubborn fouling felt less comfortable than it could have been. However, for the price, I can’t complain too much.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several weeks of regular use, the Real Avid/Revo Gun Boss Cable Kit Cleaning System Universal 17 Pieces has held up surprisingly well. I’ve used it to clean a variety of firearms, from .22LR rifles to .45 ACP pistols, and it has consistently performed its intended function.

The brushes show minimal signs of wear, and the coated steel cables remain flexible and free of kinks. The molded case has proven to be durable, withstanding bumps and scrapes without cracking or breaking. I do wipe down the components with a clean cloth after each use to prevent rust or corrosion, especially after using solvents.

Compared to my previous experiences with cheaper, generic cleaning kits, the Real Avid/Revo Gun Boss Cable Kit Cleaning System Universal 17 Pieces is noticeably superior in terms of durability and effectiveness. The quality of the brushes and cables is significantly better, leading to more thorough cleaning and a longer lifespan. It doesn’t quite reach the level of professional-grade kits costing several times more, but it provides excellent value for the price.
