Let’s Talk About ProMag Archangel Howa 1500 Hogue Long Action Precision Stock w/5-Round Follower Standard Caliber 7-Round Magazine
The ProMag Archangel Howa 1500 Hogue Long Action Precision Stock w/5-Round Follower Standard Caliber 7-Round Magazine promises to bridge the gap between a factory hunting rifle and a precision long-range platform. Marketed as a drop-in upgrade for Howa 1500 and Weatherby Vanguard long-action rifles, it offers enhanced ergonomics, improved accuracy potential, and increased magazine capacity. Is it a game-changer or just another tacticool accessory?
My journey to this stock started with a frustrating search for better accuracy from my trusty Howa 1500 in .30-06. The factory stock felt flimsy, and consistent groupings were elusive, even with hand-loaded ammunition. I needed a chassis system that provided a stable platform, improved ergonomics, and the option for higher-capacity magazines.
Upon unboxing, the ProMag Archangel stock immediately impressed me with its solid feel and aggressive styling. The Hogue overmolded grip felt comfortable and secure in my hand, a significant upgrade from the factory polymer stock. The magazine well was precisely molded, and the included 7-round magazine snapped in with a reassuring click.
Compared to a Boyds laminate stock, the Archangel offers a more modern, tactical aesthetic and the advantage of detachable magazines. It also offers a step up from the cheaper factory polymer stocks in terms of rigidity and adjustability. I chose the ProMag Archangel over a full aluminum chassis system due to its lighter weight and more budget-friendly price point.
My initial excitement was tempered by a slight concern about the polymer construction. Would it be rigid enough to deliver consistent accuracy over time? Only real-world testing would provide the answer.
Real-World Testing: Putting ProMag Archangel Howa 1500 Hogue Long Action Precision Stock w/5-Round Follower Standard Caliber 7-Round Magazine to the Test
First Use Experience
My first test of the ProMag Archangel Howa 1500 Hogue Long Action Precision Stock w/5-Round Follower Standard Caliber 7-Round Magazine took place at my local shooting range. The weather was clear and mild, providing ideal conditions for accuracy testing. I zeroed my rifle at 100 yards using a variety of ammunition, including both factory loads and my preferred handloads.
The immediate improvement in accuracy was noticeable. The rifle felt more stable and recoil was more manageable thanks to the ergonomic Hogue grip and the stock’s wider forend. I experienced no feeding issues with the included ProMag 7-round magazine, and the bolt cycled smoothly.
A minor issue arose after about 50 rounds: the magazine release button became slightly stiff. A quick cleaning and lubrication solved the problem, but it was something to keep an eye on. Overall, the initial range session was highly encouraging, indicating a significant improvement in both accuracy and handling.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of use, the ProMag Archangel stock has proven to be a reliable and worthwhile upgrade. I’ve taken it on several hunting trips in varying conditions, from dry and dusty to wet and cold. The polymer construction has held up well, showing no signs of cracking or warping.
The only noticeable wear and tear is some minor cosmetic scratches on the magazine well. The stock is easy to clean with a damp cloth and a brush, and the magazine release button has remained smooth after the initial cleaning. Compared to my previous experiences with the factory stock, the ProMag Archangel offers a significant improvement in both accuracy and comfort.
