First Thoughts on the Primos PS5 PS5 Turkey Mouth Call Triple Reed Attracts Turkey Green
The Primos PS5 PS5 Turkey Mouth Call Triple Reed Attracts Turkey Green is a deceptively simple tool that holds immense potential in the hands of a skilled turkey hunter. Primos is a well-respected name in the hunting world, and their mouth calls are known for their realism and effectiveness in mimicking the sounds of a hen turkey. This particular model, with its triple reed design and Barracuda cut, promises a versatile range of calls, from clear mid-range yelps to raspy cuts that can drive a tom wild.
I’ve been chasing longbeards for over a decade, and while I’ve had success with box calls and slate calls, I’ve always admired hunters who can paint a convincing soundscape with just a mouth call. My goal was to master the subtle nuances and control a mouth call offers, allowing me to adapt to changing turkey behavior on the fly. The Primos PS5 seemed like a great place to start.
Upon opening the package, I was immediately struck by the call’s compact size and the vibrant green color of the tape holding the reeds together. It felt lightweight and pliable. The aluminum frame gave it a reassuring sturdiness, suggesting it would hold its shape well.
I considered several other mouth calls before settling on the Primos PS5. Calls like the Zink Calls Wicked Series and the Flextone Funky Chicken offered similar triple-reed designs, but the Primos name and the specific cut of the reeds appealed to me. I was hoping the Barracuda cut would offer the right balance of clarity and rasp.
My initial reaction was cautiously optimistic. I knew mastering a mouth call would take practice, but the build quality and the promise of versatile sounds made me eager to get started. I was hoping it would live up to the hype.
Real-World Testing: Putting Primos PS5 PS5 Turkey Mouth Call Triple Reed Attracts Turkey Green to the Test
First Use Experience
My first attempt at using the Primos PS5 was, to be frank, a comedic disaster. I spent a good half hour in my garage, producing a series of squeaks, squawks, and strangled gasps that sounded nothing like a turkey. With some practice, a light diaphragm pressure and consistent airflow, I could achieve some decent hen yelps.
I tested the call primarily on a turkey hunting trip in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas. The terrain was a mix of hardwood forests and open fields, with weather conditions ranging from cool, damp mornings to warmer, sunny afternoons. The Primos PS5 performed reasonably well in these varied conditions, though moisture did occasionally affect the reed’s performance, requiring me to dry it out by mouth.
The learning curve was definitely steeper than I anticipated. Achieving consistent and realistic sounds required a lot of practice and experimentation with tongue and air pressure. The call itself seemed reasonably easy to use.
My initial frustration quickly turned to determination as I slowly began to coax recognizable turkey sounds from the call. I noticed the call responded best to a consistent airflow. The reed placement felt right, and I didn’t gag using it.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of regular practice and use in the field, the Primos PS5 has held up surprisingly well. The aluminum frame has maintained its shape, and the reeds show no signs of tearing or excessive wear. The Primos PS5 is still in good shape.
Despite regular cleaning, the reeds inevitably accumulate some saliva residue, which can slightly alter the sound. Regular maintenance and cleaning are important.
Compared to my previous experiences with box calls, the Primos PS5 offers a much greater degree of control and subtlety. I can produce a wider range of sounds and adjust my calling strategy based on the turkey’s response. I am able to customize the sound by airflow and diaphragm pressure to my mouth.
