First Impressions of Phenix Crankbait Casting Rod, 8-17#, Moderate, 1/4-1oz, 1 Piece
The Phenix Crankbait Casting Rod, 8-17#, Moderate, 1/4-1oz, 1 Piece promises to be a specialized tool for anglers targeting fish with crankbaits, a technique near and dear to my heart. After years of battling bass and walleye, I’ve learned the importance of a rod with the right action for effectively working these lures and landing fish.
My quest for the perfect crankbait rod led me to the Phenix. I was specifically looking for a rod with a moderate action to prevent ripping the hooks out of the fish’s mouth on the hookset, a common problem with faster action rods when using crankbaits.
Upon unboxing, the first thing that struck me was the vibrant red color; it’s a real eye-catcher. The rod felt surprisingly light in hand, which is crucial for all-day casting. The build quality appeared solid, with clean wraps and a comfortable-looking reel seat.
I considered a few other rods in this category, like the St. Croix Mojo Bass Glass and the Dobyns Fury Series Crankbait rod. I opted for the Phenix Crankbait Casting Rod, 8-17#, Moderate, 1/4-1oz, 1 Piece due to its reputation for sensitivity combined with the desired moderate action and the attractive price point.
My initial impression was one of excitement tempered with a bit of skepticism; could this rod truly deliver the perfect blend of sensitivity and forgiveness needed for effective crankbait fishing? Only time on the water would tell.
Real-World Testing: Putting Phenix Crankbait Casting Rod, 8-17#, Moderate, 1/4-1oz, 1 Piece to the Test
First Use Experience
I first tested the Phenix Crankbait Casting Rod, 8-17#, Moderate, 1/4-1oz, 1 Piece on a local lake known for its healthy population of largemouth bass. I paired it with a Shimano Curado reel spooled with 12-pound fluorocarbon line and a variety of crankbaits ranging from 1/4 oz shallow divers to 3/4 oz medium divers.
The moderate action of the rod was immediately apparent and appreciated. It allowed the crankbait to track true without overpowering it, and I could easily feel the lure bumping along the bottom and deflecting off cover. The rod also provided excellent feedback when a fish struck, telegraphing the bite clearly.
I fished for about five hours in partly cloudy conditions with a slight breeze. I didn’t experience any issues with the rod, although I did notice that it took a little getting used to the moderate action after being accustomed to faster rods.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of use, the Phenix Crankbait Casting Rod, 8-17#, Moderate, 1/4-1oz, 1 Piece has become one of my go-to rods for crankbait fishing. It has held up remarkably well to regular use, showing no signs of wear and tear.
The finish remains pristine, and the guides are still securely attached. I clean the rod after each use with a damp cloth and occasionally apply a rod protectant to keep it in top condition.
Compared to my previous experiences with other crankbait rods, the Phenix offers a superior combination of sensitivity, forgiveness, and overall comfort. It has definitely exceeded my expectations and improved my crankbait fishing success rate.
