Petsafe Sportsmen Barnacle Review

Let’s Dive into Petsafe Sportsmen Barnacle

The Petsafe Sportsmen Barnacle is a uniquely designed treat-dispensing dog toy aimed at keeping your canine companion entertained and mentally stimulated. Manufactured by Petsafe, this blaze orange, multi-chambered toy features the patented Treat Meter system for unpredictable treat release. I was intrigued by its promise to engage dogs for extended playtime, and the affordable price point made it an easy decision.

My old pal, Buster, a hyperactive Labrador with a penchant for chewing furniture, needed a new challenge. Kongs and bones were dispatched in minutes, leaving me searching for something that could truly hold his attention. I hoped the Petsafe Sportsmen Barnacle would be the answer to my furniture-saving prayers.

Upon unboxing, the bright orange color immediately caught my eye. The Barnacle felt solid, though lighter than expected, constructed from a durable-feeling plastic. It’s shaped like a cluster of chambers, reminiscent of a real barnacle, with bone-shaped grooves adding to its visual appeal.

Compared to the classic Kong or the popular West Paw Zogoflex Bumi, the Petsafe Sportsmen Barnacle distinguishes itself with its multi-chamber design and adjustable Treat Meter. While the Kong is primarily a chew toy with treat-stuffing capabilities, and the Bumi is a flexible fetch toy, the Barnacle focuses solely on treat dispensing and unpredictable movement. I chose it for its specific function as an interactive treat puzzle.

My initial impression was cautiously optimistic. The design seemed clever and engaging, but I wondered if Buster would quickly figure out the Treat Meter and lose interest. Only time, and a very enthusiastic Labrador, would tell.

Real-World Testing: Putting Petsafe Sportsmen Barnacle to the Test

First Use Experience

The first test took place in my backyard, a familiar and exciting environment for Buster. I loaded the three chambers of the Petsafe Sportsmen Barnacle with his favorite small training treats. I also smeared some peanut butter into the bone-shaped grooves for an extra layer of enticement.

Buster was immediately intrigued by the bright orange object, sniffing and nudging it with his nose. The unpredictable bounce of the Barnacle kept him moving, as promised, and the treats dispensed randomly kept him engaged. The wet grass didn’t seem to affect its performance, though the peanut butter did attract some dirt.

He seemed to figure out that batting the Barnacle with his paws was the most effective way to release the treats. There were no issues beyond the initial learning curve.

Extended Use & Reliability

After several weeks of use, the Petsafe Sportsmen Barnacle has held up remarkably well. There are some minor scratches on the surface, but no significant signs of wear and tear. The blaze orange color has retained its vibrancy.

Buster is a powerful chewer, but thankfully, the Barnacle has withstood his persistent gnawing. Cleaning is relatively easy; a quick rinse in the sink or a run through the top rack of the dishwasher does the trick. Compared to some of the fabric-based toys we’ve tried, this is a dream to maintain.

The Barnacle has exceeded my expectations, providing a reliable and engaging way to keep Buster entertained. It’s become a regular part of our routine, especially on days when he needs extra mental stimulation.
