The Patriot Ordnance Factory Renegade + Complete Upper 5.56x45mm NATO 10.50″ Black Nitride Barrel Aluminum Black Anodized Receiver 9 Made a Bold First Impression
After a decade immersed in the world of tactical gear, I thought I’d seen it all when it comes to AR-15 platforms. Then came the Patriot Ordnance Factory (POF) Renegade + Complete Upper 5.56x45mm NATO 10.50″ Black Nitride Barrel Aluminum Black Anodized Receiver 9. This isn’t just another AR upper; it’s a statement of engineering, promising to redefine what a direct impingement system can achieve.
I needed a reliable, compact upper receiver for a patrol rifle build – something that could handle the rigors of training and potential real-world scenarios. My search criteria included enhanced reliability, superior heat dissipation, and maximum control over gas regulation. The POF Renegade + seemed to check all the boxes, especially with its advertised improvements to the direct impingement system.
Unboxing the Renegade + upper was like unwrapping a precisely crafted tool. The black anodized finish was flawless, and the weight felt reassuringly solid without being cumbersome. The attention to detail was immediately apparent, from the clean lines of the receiver to the aggressive styling of the handguard. It screamed quality and innovation.
I was considering the Daniel Defense MK18 upper and the Bravo Company Manufacturing (BCM) MK2 upper receiver group, both reputable choices. However, the POF’s unique features, like the roller cam pin and patented heat sink barrel nut, intrigued me. The adjustable gas block was also a major selling point, promising versatility with different ammunition types and suppressor configurations. The POF Renegade + Complete Upper promised to solve the issues of heat and reliability I’d encountered with other DI AR-15 platforms.
My first impression was a mix of excitement and anticipation. The POF Renegade + Complete Upper appeared to be a serious piece of kit, promising a significant upgrade over standard AR uppers. I was eager to get it onto a lower and see if it lived up to the hype.
Real-World Testing: Putting Patriot Ordnance Factory Renegade + Complete Upper 5.56x45mm NATO 10.50″ Black Nitride Barrel Aluminum Black Anodized Receiver 9 to the Test
First Use Experience
I first took the Renegade + to my local shooting range, a well-maintained facility with both indoor and outdoor ranges. The weather was typical for late spring: sunny, but with a noticeable breeze that kicked up some dust. I mounted the upper on a mil-spec lower receiver and topped it with a red dot optic I’ve come to trust.
The POF Renegade + ran flawlessly out of the box. The adjustable gas block was easy to tune using the included tool, and I quickly found the optimal setting for my preferred 55-grain ammunition. Even with rapid firing, recoil was manageable, and the straight gas tube seemed to reduce heat build-up compared to my other ARs. There were no malfunctions in the first 200 rounds.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of regular use, the POF Renegade + has proven to be incredibly reliable. I’ve run it through several carbine courses in varying weather conditions, from sweltering summer days to damp, chilly mornings, and it hasn’t skipped a beat. The Black Nitride barrel finish has held up remarkably well, showing no signs of rust or corrosion despite being exposed to rain and humidity.
Maintenance has been simple. A quick wipe-down after each range session is usually all it takes to keep it running smoothly. I’ve disassembled the bolt carrier group a few times for a more thorough cleaning, and it’s easy to access and clean all the critical components. Compared to my old direct impingement AR, the POF Renegade + requires less frequent cleaning and seems to run cleaner overall, thanks to the efficient gas system and Black Nitride finish.
The POF Renegade + significantly outperforms my previous upper receiver in terms of heat management and reliability. The roller cam pin provides smooth operation, while the heat sink barrel nut and adjustable gas block keep the system running cool and efficiently, even under heavy use.
