First Impressions of Pathfinder Survival Blanket
The Pathfinder Survival Blanket isn’t your typical throw-away emergency blanket. Manufactured by Pathfinder, this blanket aims to be a versatile piece of kit for anyone spending time outdoors. It promises a combination of heat reflection and durable weather protection in a compact package.
I was looking for a lightweight and packable emergency shelter solution. I needed something more robust than a flimsy mylar blanket for unexpected overnight stays during hiking or hunting trips. The promise of both heat reflection and a durable nylon side intrigued me.
Upon unboxing, I immediately noticed the Pathfinder Survival Blanket felt more substantial than I expected. The nylon side had a reassuring, slightly stiff texture, and the aluminum side was cleanly applied. It was neatly folded and packed surprisingly small.
Compared to a standard mylar emergency blanket, the Pathfinder Survival Blanket felt like a significant upgrade in durability and usability. I also considered a heavier canvas tarp but chose this for its lightweight and reflective properties. Initial impressions were definitely positive; I was excited to see how it performed in the field.
Real-World Testing: Putting Pathfinder Survival Blanket to the Test
First Use Experience
My initial test took place during a fall backpacking trip in the Allegheny National Forest. I used the Pathfinder Survival Blanket as a ground tarp under my tent to protect the floor from moisture and abrasion. The nylon side effectively blocked ground moisture, and the blanket showed no signs of wear after several nights.
The temperatures dipped into the low 40s overnight. I experimented by wrapping the aluminum side around myself while sitting by the campfire. It noticeably reflected the heat back toward me, adding an extra layer of warmth.
The blanket was easy to deploy and repack. The only minor issue was the initial stiffness of the nylon, which made folding it neatly a bit challenging. However, this diminished with use.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of use on various outdoor excursions, the Pathfinder Survival Blanket has proven to be a reliable piece of gear. I’ve used it as an impromptu sunshade during hot summer days at the range and as a windbreak while ice fishing. The aluminum side still effectively reflects heat.
Durability has been impressive. There are no tears or punctures in the nylon, and the aluminum reflective layer remains intact despite repeated folding and unfolding. Cleaning is simple; I just wipe it down with a damp cloth.
Compared to previous experiences with other emergency blankets, the Pathfinder Survival Blanket far outperforms them in both durability and versatility. It’s a significant upgrade in quality and functionality.
