First Impressions of Moriarti OpticsPlanet Exclusive AR-9 9mm 4.5in Pistol Upper Assembly
The Moriarti OpticsPlanet Exclusive AR-9 9mm 4.5in Pistol Upper Assembly promises a compact and potent package for AR-platform enthusiasts. Moriarti aims to deliver a reliable and accurate 9mm pistol upper receiver, and this OpticsPlanet exclusive boasts a short barrel and M-LOK handguard. This build piqued my interest as I was seeking a dedicated 9mm AR pistol upper to complement my existing AR-15 setup, primarily for close-quarters training and recreational shooting.
I had been searching for a 9mm upper receiver that was both compact and offered good maneuverability. Previously, I was using a longer 16-inch 9mm carbine upper, which felt cumbersome in confined spaces during training drills. My alternatives included a similar upper from Palmetto State Armory and another from Foxtrot Mike Products; however, the Moriarti offered a compelling balance of price and features, particularly the OpticsPlanet Exclusive designation which suggested a specific focus on quality and potentially unique features. My initial thought was hopeful optimism; I was excited about the prospect of a reliable and accurate short-barreled 9mm AR pistol.
Upon receiving the Moriarti upper, the first thing I noticed was the solid feel of the assembly. The Nitride finish appeared even and well-applied, giving the upper a clean and professional aesthetic. The 4-inch M-LOK handguard felt comfortable in hand, offering ample space for mounting accessories. Overall, my first impression was positive: this seemed like a well-built and potentially high-performing upper receiver.
Real-World Testing: Putting Moriarti OpticsPlanet Exclusive AR-9 9mm 4.5in Pistol Upper Assembly to the Test
First Use Experience
I first tested the Moriarti OpticsPlanet Exclusive AR-9 9mm 4.5in Pistol Upper Assembly at my local outdoor shooting range. The weather was clear and sunny, ideal conditions for a range day. I paired the upper with a dedicated AR-9 lower receiver and a variety of 9mm ammunition from different manufacturers, including Federal, CCI, and Winchester.
The first few magazines ran flawlessly, with no malfunctions or issues. The recoil was manageable, typical of a 9mm AR pistol. Accuracy was surprisingly good for such a short barrel; I was consistently hitting steel targets at 25 yards with ease. After about 100 rounds, I started experiencing a few failures to extract, which I initially attributed to the ammunition.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of use and approximately 500 rounds fired, the Moriarti upper has proven to be mostly reliable, with some caveats. The failures to extract persisted intermittently, especially with cheaper, steel-cased ammunition. Thorough cleaning and lubrication of the bolt carrier group seemed to mitigate the issue temporarily.
The Nitride finish has held up well, showing no signs of wear despite frequent use. Maintenance is straightforward: a standard AR-15 cleaning kit is sufficient. Compared to my previous 9mm upper, the Moriarti is significantly more maneuverable and easier to handle in tight spaces. The intermittent extraction issues are a definite drawback, but manageable with proper maintenance and higher-quality ammunition.

Performance & Functionality

The Moriarti upper comes with a standard A2 flash hider. The 4-inch M-LOK handguard allows for the attachment of various accessories, such as lights, lasers, and foregrips. The 1/2×36 barrel threads are compatible with many 9mm muzzle devices.
