First Impressions of Mepps Musky Flashabou In-Line Spinner
The pursuit of the elusive musky is a siren song for many anglers, and I’ve spent years chasing those toothy giants. Finding the right lure can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack, but the Mepps Musky Flashabou In-Line Spinner has always been a strong contender. This lure promises to deliver the flash and vibration necessary to trigger strikes from even the most stubborn muskellunge, and I was eager to put it through its paces.
For years, I’ve relied on larger, bulkier musky lures, but their size can be a detriment in pressured waters. I needed a presentation that offered flash and vibration but in a more streamlined and subtle package. The Mepps Musky Flashabou In-Line Spinner seemed to fit the bill.
Upon unboxing, the first thing that struck me was its robust construction. The weight felt right, suggesting quality components, and the Flashabou skirt provided an enticing shimmer. Compared to some of the cheaper in-line spinners on the market, this lure exuded an air of quality. It’s definitely built to withstand the abuse a musky can dish out.
I’ve used similar in-line spinners from brands like Blue Fox and Panther Martin, but the Mepps Musky Flashabou In-Line Spinner stands out due to its larger size and the premium Flashabou material. While the Blue Fox Vibrax Musky is also a great lure, the Mepps spinner offers a different presentation with its Flashabou skirt. The Panther Martin’s smaller profile is better suited for smaller fish species, and its blade design is not specifically tailored to the musky’s predatory needs. I chose the Mepps spinner hoping for a bigger, flashier presentation.
My initial reaction was one of cautious optimism. The quality was evident, and the design appeared well-suited for musky fishing. I was excited to see if it would live up to its promise of enticing even the most wary muskies.
Real-World Testing: Putting Mepps Musky Flashabou In-Line Spinner to the Test
First Use Experience
My first outing with the Mepps Musky Flashabou In-Line Spinner was on a local lake known for its challenging musky population. The water was slightly stained, and the wind created a good chop on the surface. I fished it using a heavy-action rod, a high-capacity baitcasting reel, and a wire leader to prevent bite-offs.
The lure cast like a bullet, and I immediately noticed the strong vibration it produced on the retrieve. It cut through the water with minimal resistance and the Flashabou skirt pulsed enticingly. After about an hour of fishing, I felt a solid thump and set the hook hard. After a five-minute battle, I landed a beautiful 38-inch musky.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of consistent use, the Mepps Musky Flashabou In-Line Spinner has become a staple in my musky arsenal. The lure has held up remarkably well to the constant abuse of musky fishing. The Flashabou skirt remains intact, and the blade still spins freely.
There are minimal signs of wear and tear, besides a few scratches on the blade from toothy encounters. I rinse the lure with fresh water after each use and occasionally apply a drop of oil to the swivel to ensure smooth operation. Maintaining the Mepps Musky Flashabou In-Line Spinner is easy.
In the past, I’ve had issues with other lures losing their paint or the skirts falling apart after a few fish. The Mepps Musky Flashabou In-Line Spinner has outperformed those lures significantly in terms of durability. It is by far a superior lure and I plan to acquire more!
