What Makes MagBay Lures Cencero Stand Out?
The MagBay Lures Cencero isn’t just another lure in a tackle box overflowing with options; it’s a meticulously engineered piece of angling equipment designed to entice even the most discerning wahoo. Crafted by MagBay Lures, this high-speed lure boasts a stainless steel construction and an innovative skirting mechanism, promising both durability and ease of use on the water. At a price point of $59.99, it sits in a competitive segment, demanding a close look at its performance and value.
I’ve spent years battling wahoo, often frustrated by lures that simply couldn’t hold up to the rigors of high-speed trolling or lacked the enticing action to trigger a strike. I was specifically searching for a lure that offered both robust construction to withstand the immense pressure and speed, and a reliable skirting system that wouldn’t fail after a few encounters.
The unboxing experience was straightforward, with the lure arriving in a simple but secure package. My initial impression was positive, noting the solid feel of the stainless steel and the smooth operation of the skirting mechanism. The lure felt substantial without being overly heavy, suggesting a good balance for high-speed runs.
Compared to other wahoo lures I’ve used, such as the Yo-Zuri Bonita and the Williamson Sailfish Catcher, the MagBay Lures Cencero distinguished itself with its seemingly simpler, yet robust construction. While the Yo-Zuri offers vibrant colors and the Williamson is known for its classic design, I was drawn to the Cencero’s promise of a hassle-free skirting system and durable build, hoping for a longer-lasting and more reliable lure.
Initially, I felt cautiously optimistic. The lure’s design looked promising, and the materials felt high-quality, but the true test would be its performance in the challenging conditions where wahoo thrive.
Real-World Testing: Putting MagBay Lures Cencero to the Test
First Use Experience
My first opportunity to test the MagBay Lures Cencero came during a three-day wahoo fishing trip off the coast of Baja California. We were trolling in deep blue water, targeting areas known for high concentrations of wahoo. The conditions were ideal, with clear skies and moderate swells, but the real challenge was the relentless speed required to trigger strikes from these lightning-fast predators.
The MagBay Lures Cencero performed admirably in these demanding conditions. I ran it alongside other proven wahoo lures, and it consistently held its own, tracking straight and exhibiting a lively swimming action even at high speeds. Its performance remained consistent even when encountering seaweed patches and the occasional debris, proving its ability to withstand some abuse.
The MagBay Lures Cencero was incredibly easy to use. The skirting mechanism allowed for quick and effortless skirt changes, a huge advantage when experimenting with different colors and profiles to match prevailing conditions. No fiddling with tiny screws or struggling with stubborn connections – a welcome change from some of the more complex lure designs I’ve encountered.
After the first day, I was impressed. The lure had held up without any signs of damage and, more importantly, had enticed several strikes, resulting in a couple of landed wahoo. The only minor issue was a slight tendency for the skirt to occasionally bunch up at extremely high speeds (20+ knots), but this was easily rectified with a quick adjustment.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of use, including numerous wahoo trips and countless hours spent trolling, the MagBay Lures Cencero has proven to be a reliable and durable addition to my tackle arsenal. The stainless steel construction has held up remarkably well, showing no signs of corrosion or structural weakness. The skirting mechanism continues to function smoothly, even after repeated use.
The MagBay Lures Cencero shows very little wear and tear after extended use. The stainless steel body maintains its shine, and the skirt, though showing some signs of fraying, remains functional and easily replaceable. I’ve also noticed that the lure holds its color well, resisting fading even after prolonged exposure to sunlight and saltwater.
Maintenance is incredibly simple. A quick rinse with freshwater after each use is usually sufficient to keep the lure in good condition. Occasionally, I’ll apply a light coating of corrosion inhibitor to the stainless steel to further protect it from the elements.
Compared to my previous experiences with other wahoo lures, the MagBay Lures Cencero has significantly outperformed many in terms of durability and ease of use. While some lures might offer more intricate designs or flashier finishes, the Cencero’s rugged construction and reliable performance make it a clear winner in the long run.
