First Impressions of Lunkerhunt Impact Slash 12S Deep Diving Jerkbait
The Lunkerhunt Impact Slash 12S Deep Diving Jerkbait promises to be a tournament-grade lure designed to reach the depths where big fish lurk. Marketed for its suspending action and wide swing, this jerkbait aims to entice strikes with its rattling, shaking descent. I’m eager to see if it lives up to the hype, especially at its surprisingly affordable price point.
For years, I’ve struggled to consistently target fish holding deep in our local lake during the summer months. Traditional crankbaits often feel like they’re just skimming the surface of where I suspect the larger fish are hiding. I needed a lure that could reliably reach those depths and stay in the strike zone longer.
Upon unboxing the Lunkerhunt Impact Slash 12S Deep Diving Jerkbait, I was initially impressed by the lure’s solid construction. The finish appears durable, and the integrated rattle sounds promising. Its 4.3-inch length and 5/8 oz weight feel substantial, suggesting it can handle the rigors of repeated casts and retrieves.
Compared to the Rapala Deep Tail Dancer and the Strike King KVD Deep Jerkbait, the Lunkerhunt Impact Slash 12S Deep Diving Jerkbait stood out due to its price. Both the Rapala and Strike King options are significantly more expensive. I chose the Lunkerhunt lure hoping to get similar performance without breaking the bank.
Initially, I’m cautiously optimistic about the Lunkerhunt Impact Slash 12S Deep Diving Jerkbait. The build quality seems decent, and the advertised features align with my needs, so I am excited to see how it performs on the water. If it delivers on its promise of deep diving and suspending action, it could become a staple in my tackle box.
Real-World Testing: Putting Lunkerhunt Impact Slash 12S Deep Diving Jerkbait to the Test
First Use Experience
I tested the Lunkerhunt Impact Slash 12S Deep Diving Jerkbait on a recent fishing trip to Lake Fork, known for its deep structure and bass population. I focused on areas with submerged timber and drop-offs, targeting depths of 10-15 feet. The weather was overcast with a slight breeze, perfect conditions for jerkbait fishing.
The lure performed admirably in these conditions. It reached its advertised depth of 12 feet relatively quickly, even with a moderate retrieve speed. I experimented with different jerk-pause cadences, and the Lunkerhunt Impact Slash 12S Deep Diving Jerkbait suspended nicely during the pauses, giving the fish ample time to strike.
It did take a little getting used to the lure’s action. Its wide swing requires a more deliberate jerking motion than some other jerkbaits I’ve used. After a few casts, however, I found the sweet spot and started getting strikes.
The only initial issue I noticed was that the stock hooks seemed a bit dull. I missed a couple of strikes that I felt I should have landed, leading me to believe a hook upgrade might be in order.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several weeks of use, the Lunkerhunt Impact Slash 12S Deep Diving Jerkbait has held up surprisingly well. The finish has shown minimal signs of wear, even after bouncing off rocks and timber. The rattle continues to function perfectly, adding to its fish-attracting ability.
The lure’s durability has been impressive. Despite a few close encounters with submerged obstacles, it hasn’t cracked or broken. The split rings and swivels are still in good condition.
Maintenance is simple: just rinse it with fresh water after each use and occasionally check the hooks for sharpness. I did end up replacing the stock hooks with higher-quality trebles, which significantly improved my hook-up ratio.
Compared to other jerkbaits I’ve used in the past, the Lunkerhunt Impact Slash 12S Deep Diving Jerkbait performs admirably, especially considering its price. While it might not have the refined action of some higher-end lures, its ability to reach deep water and suspend effectively makes it a valuable tool for targeting deep-water fish.
