The Leupold VX-Freedom Matte Black 4-12x40mm, 1″ Tube Hunter-Plex Reticle Made a Bold First Impression
The Leupold VX-Freedom Matte Black 4-12x40mm, 1″ Tube Hunter-Plex Reticle aims to bridge the gap between affordability and quality, offering a versatile optic for hunters and recreational shooters. It boasts a Leupold pedigree known for reliability and clear glass, while keeping the price point accessible.
I needed a reliable scope for my new deer rifle that could handle various hunting terrains from dense woods to open fields. My aging scope, a hand-me-down from my grandfather, just wasn’t cutting it anymore. I craved better light gathering and the ability to accurately engage targets at varying distances.
Unboxing the VX-Freedom, I immediately noted the solid feel. The matte black finish was clean and professional, and the adjustments felt positive and precise. The weight, at 15.5 ounces, struck a good balance – substantial enough to feel robust, but not so heavy as to unbalance the rifle.
I considered the Vortex Crossfire II and the Bushnell Banner scopes as alternatives. Ultimately, I chose the Leupold for its reputation for superior glass quality and the trust I place in the Leupold brand. I wasn’t disappointed.
My first impression was excitement tempered with cautious optimism. The scope felt right in my hands, but the proof would be in the field.
Real-World Testing: Putting Leupold VX-Freedom Matte Black 4-12x40mm, 1″ Tube Hunter-Plex Reticle to the Test
First Use Experience
I tested the VX-Freedom at my local shooting range and during a weekend deer hunt in the Allegheny Mountains. The range provided a controlled environment to zero the scope and get a feel for its adjustments, while the hunt offered a real-world test of its performance in varying light conditions and terrain. It handled flawlessly.
The scope performed admirably in both sunshine and overcast conditions, maintaining a bright and clear sight picture. I was particularly impressed by its ability to gather light during the early morning hours of the hunt. The adjustments were easy to use, even with gloved hands, and held zero consistently after repeated shots.
Getting used to the scope was remarkably simple. The eye relief, ranging from 3.7 to 4.9 inches, offered plenty of flexibility for different shooting positions and rifle setups. There were no surprises, only consistent and reliable performance.
Extended Use & Reliability
After three months of consistent use, the VX-Freedom continues to impress. It has become my go-to optic for any hunting trip.
The finish has held up well, showing no signs of scratching or fading despite being subjected to brush and occasional rain. Cleaning is simple, requiring only a lens cloth to remove fingerprints and smudges. Compared to my grandfather’s old scope, the VX-Freedom is leagues ahead in clarity, durability, and ease of use. It far exceeded my expectations.
