First Thoughts on the Leupold Mark 5HD 7-35x 56mm FFP TMR Reticle Rifle Scope – 3.60″-3.80″ Eye Relief, 14.70-3 ft @ 100 yds Field of View, 7-35x Adjustable Magnification, 15.70″ Length
The Leupold Mark 5HD 7-35x 56mm FFP TMR Reticle Rifle Scope is a serious piece of equipment, designed for shooters who demand the utmost precision at extreme ranges. Manufactured by Leupold, a name synonymous with quality optics, this scope promises to deliver exceptional clarity and accuracy.
For years, I’ve been frustrated with scopes that simply couldn’t resolve targets at distances beyond 800 yards with enough detail to make precise corrections. I needed something that could not only reach out to those distances, but also provide a crisp, clear image with a reticle that allowed for quick and accurate holdovers.
Upon unboxing the Mark 5HD, the immediate impression is one of robust quality. The matte finish exudes durability, and the adjustments feel solid and precise. It’s noticeably lighter than some other high-magnification scopes I’ve handled, which is a welcome surprise.
I considered the Nightforce ATACR and the Vortex Razor HD Gen III, but the Leupold offered a compelling combination of magnification range, weight, and reputation for excellent glass. Ultimately, the Leupold’s reputation for superior light transmission and the TMR reticle, which I’ve used successfully in the past, swayed my decision.
My initial excitement was high; this felt like the scope that could finally unlock consistent hits at extreme long range. Time would tell if it lived up to the hype, but the first impression was certainly promising.
Real-World Testing: Putting Leupold Mark 5HD 7-35x 56mm FFP TMR Reticle Rifle Scope – 3.60″-3.80″ Eye Relief, 14.70-3 ft @ 100 yds Field of View, 7-35x Adjustable Magnification, 15.70″ Length to the Test
First Use Experience
My first outing with the Leupold Mark 5HD was at a shooting range nestled in the high desert of Nevada. The range offered targets out to 1200 yards, providing an ideal environment to stretch the scope’s legs.
I experienced varying conditions during the day, from bright sunlight to gusty winds and even a brief dust storm. The Mark 5HD performed admirably under all circumstances. The image remained clear and bright even at the highest magnification, and the parallax adjustment effectively eliminated blurring at different distances.
Initially, the sheer range of the magnification took some getting used to. Finding my target at 35x required a steady hand and a good spotting scope. However, the generous eye relief made it comfortable to stay behind the scope for extended periods.
The only initial issue I encountered was a slight stiffness in the elevation turret, but it smoothed out after a few adjustments.
Extended Use & Reliability
After several months of consistent use, the Leupold Mark 5HD has become an indispensable part of my long-range setup. The scope has proven to be remarkably durable, withstanding the rigors of transport and regular use.
Despite exposure to rain, dust, and temperature extremes, the finish remains pristine, and the adjustments retain their crisp, positive clicks. Cleaning the lenses is straightforward, and the Leupold lens covers provide ample protection when not in use.
Compared to my previous scope, a Bushnell Elite Tactical, the Mark 5HD offers significantly better image clarity, especially at higher magnifications. The Leupold’s superior light transmission is noticeable during low-light conditions, extending my effective shooting time.
